I recently bought a ZE and after speaking to a mechanic who knows the motor, it turns out that it has something like 280 cams in it. he suggested that you would be better off with something smaller as with such big cams the exhaust valves will still be open while the inlet valves are opening, loosing boost out the exhaust and leaving the motor less responsive.

So what would be the optimum size cams to use. (The motor also has a nevo pully and is running haltech e6k ECU)

256 or 264 seems a good match and is commonly used.

^ i agree

256 is best for you. 264 if you didnt have the pulley kit

or you could just put some stock bigport cams and sell your current ones for a nice profit.

It's true, on an SC motor, too much cam overlap can cause problems. But even the stock cams have some overlap. It's just a question of what you want (to generalise): less low down, but a screaming top end, or a wide power band with lower peak power.

If it was me, I'd leave them in there and see how the motor goes. If I didn't like the low end I'd consider changing to something smaller. Also you'd be smart to confirm exactly what the cams are before planning too much.
