Car - ke70

motor - 4k

use - daily

problem - RUST!!

occurs/started when - Since purchase date(11/04/10)

personal situation - After being a long time fan of corolla's I have finally purchased my first ke70! I paid $500 and it runs fine as far as I can tell so far. Plans for the future are to get it registered and make it my daily so I can sell my current daily (91 integra) and drop in a 4age to have some fun with :)

As expected of its age there is some rust throughout the body. I can see where some of this has been fixed up previously throughout the car. I intend to give the little parts a touch up as the touch up paint used doesnt match all to well. However there are a couple of spots that are worrying me. Main two are in the rear quarter panels. Also a bit just above the rear bumber.(pics below)

My question is are these spots fixable without replacing panels? I don't mind putting in a bit of time sanding back/bogging or welding in new metal and I don't intend on this being the prettiest thing more so just keep the rust at bay and stop it getting out of control. Would it be worth my time fixing these spots or try find a car with a little less rust? Would this get road worthy with this rust or am i dreaming?

Any help would be appreciated also any extra info/links/tips on rust/rust removal would be greatly appreciated.

The pics are of the spots mentioned above. One inside of the boot is where the left quarter pannel has rusted through and the other of the spots affecting the rear of the car. If more/better quality pictures are needed to judge let me know and ill get some asap.

nearly all 70's crap out their because guys dont replace worn boot seals or remove leaves that get caught in the gutter... my 70 was out in the rain when i 1st brought it, next day randomly popped the boot to find my car had aquired a free water Dam. just where the jack goes, best to cut it out, weld in a plate, a skim of filler, sand and paint. dont forget to drill a small drain hole at the lowest point, and replace your boot seal.

Well it's just been raining tonight so I'll open it up tomorrow and give that a look at. Any tips on tools I will need or what type of metal to use and anything to be careful with. Any info on what I might need or any step in the proccess would e greatly appreciated. If anyone also has any links to rust repair articles would be great.

tools:

Grinder W/ flapper disc and thin cutting wheel
wire brush
rust nutralizer + old paint brush
welder, sheet metal or thin plate steel - as long as its not Gal coated.

Pretty much get your grinder w/flapper disc and take the paint off the affected area
cut out the rust with grinder and cutting disc
just cut out the sections where u can see light and bad surface rust. the mild surface rust just hit with the flapper
once your happy get to it with the rust inhibitor stuff.
cut some steel, tak and weld in place
apply some bog, sand back, prime then paint.

its not that hard, welding it will be your hardest thing

make sure u dont set your welder up with high amperage or you will blow through. but its simple enough. hows your wheel well look? mine was messed pretty bad when i bought mine so i just cut it out and welding in a plate

I had a quick look at them when i first got it and the wheel wells looked alright. Thanks for help, be giving this a shot next weekend when i got some time and see how I go. Not sure on how to weld so hopefully dad can spair a moment to get me on the right track although he has already got up me about buying it and stated he won't be helping me, he will come around though :P
