Hi i was given this gearbox by a guy down the road from me he said it was a toyota gearbox but i cannot find any number on it to identify it. Ive taken some photos so maybe someone knows by just looking at it? both shafts have 21 teeth. Thanks

w57 or 58. not 55. 55s have a alloy sandwich plate. probably ex hilux with that extension housing (gear lever position).

Awsome i was hoping someone would say that. Is there any way to be certain its W57 or W58 is there a bellhousing that only suits W57 or W58 or are all W series bellhousings the same?

bells are all the same patern on the GB side. google W58 etc there is a web page with ratio's etc. i wouldnt be too worried about 57/58. that extension housing is going to be your problem in a corolla. apparent castlemaine rod shop? does the swap over thing for a pretty reasonable exchange price.

Some of the guys over at toymods seem to think its either a G5x box or possible a W56 box??? because of the tail housing length? what do you think about that?

that certainly doesnt look like any W50,5,7,8 box i have ever seen before.
as you said stouty, compare it to any other W box and the rear end is completely different.
and IIRC the shifter housing flange has 6 bolts on all W5X gearboxes, the one you have only has four.

it could be a W4X?

actually, it can't be a W4X. ignore that.
it does look like a toyota box though :S
does it have any markings on it whatsoever?

Mark input shaft, mark output shaft.
Put into (each) gear and count the rotation of output for each input rotation.....work out ratio's...conclude which box it is

It doesn't look like W58... Looks too short.

I just swapped a G52 from a mid 90s hilux and this looks quite similar, only 2wd. If I was a betting man I'd say 2wd hilux late 80's to mid-90s, code of G52. I was lead to believe, but haven't confirmed for myself that a W series bellhousing is compatible with the G series box.

hey stouty you should by a W5 to M motor bellhousing and if it doesnt fit the gearbox ill buy the bell off you cheap :)

that would make sense actually. which is why the bellhousing side looks identical to a W box.
did those hiluxes run an R series engine?
if so, then i would say that is what you have in your possession.

It appears to be a G-52. Process of eliminations would also suggest it's a box from the G series family.

I just wish i could find some ratios so you could check.
