Car - AE86

motor - Small port 4A-GE

use - gonna be my daily

problem - i cant set the dizzy timing to 10 BTDC.

occurs/started when - trying to set dizzy timing

personal situation - need to fix so the engine runs right.

ok so i cant set the dizzy timing to 10 BTDC currently its running at about 41 BTDC according to my timing light. at what it is now it will run and is sorta drivable. its a little sluggish untill it passes 3500-4000RPM then it starts to run like normal. but at about 5000RPM it pops a little bit and it also pops a bit when you back off the power.

i have also taken my dizzy out and repositioned it over 5 times to make sure its in the right tooth.

ive tryed to set it to 10 BTDC and it just dies before you can get it anywhere near it.
i have been using the 4A-GE manual and i have checked my crank & cam timing which is good. my idle is about 900-1000rpm ( when warm)

i have no idea what the problem is and it has been annoying the shit out of me as this is one of the final things to do before i go and get a blue slip!

if its that far out, the dizzy is out a tooth.

for interests sake, take the dizzy out and retard it one tooth and see what happens.

this happened to me on a 4age once, the cam timing was out one tooth and caused the dizzy to be out

ive checked the cam timing and the dizzy timing. i will try this retardation of the dizzy and see how it go's but i dont think its the issue.

man that sounds very similar to how mine is running at the moment, only thing is that my timing is set perfectly at 10 btdc... i still think mine is timing related as i have also had the problem you mention before. the first time i ended up taking may car to a mechanic who actually sorted it out, but now its back.... (see my latest thread)

but at about 5000RPM it pops a little bit and it also pops a bit when you back off the powerdefinitely sounds like it is running retarded and this is exactly what my car is doing. backfire/popping is also a sign of lean fuel mixture so im not sure whether i have a fuel issue or not. sorry this isn't an answer but hopefully we might be able to sort each others problems out!

ps. i'm also running a smallport

So how did you get 41btdc as a value? Have you got some extra extra markings on your timing covers?

nah he must have a digital timing light were you can set the value on the light and then time of the 0 mark to adjust to a more accurate reading.

the only thing i can see being an issue is the timing belt out a tooth. either that or the dizzy is not put in correctly

i would try what slide86 said. take it out and move it over a tooth and see what happens

i will be checking the dizzy timing again.

yea as mentioned by H8CHIR6KU the timing light i have allows me to advance the timing flash and at 41 degrees advanced the flash is showing it to be 0 BTDC
