Does anyone know if this gearset would be even remotely drivable with a 4.3 rear end?

First gear on the 3 gear set is 2.67 or so. Stock is 3.6 for first gear.

Ideally I would use that for my daily and switch to a 4.77 for track use.

What's you're redline?

Basically if you go the TRD "3 gear set" I think you mean the set that only has different 1st and 2nd - the rest are the same. Anyway 1st is taller at 2.63:1 and so is 2nd at 1.891:1 So if the final drive is the same your max speeds in 1st and 2nd both increase. There is another TRD gearset that changes 4 gears and 1st, 2nd and 3rd are taller again with 5th being slightly shorter. The TRD final drive was available at 5.375:1

This page (http://www.trdparts.jp/english/list_race-mis_ae86.html) has the info on the TRD T50 gearsets from TRD.

So which ratios do you have?

Cheers

I'm looking into the 2 gear set, or "3 gear crossmission" whatever that means in JDM.

I'm aware only 1st and 2nd are different. The rest of the gears are close enough....though 3rd is a bit too far from 4th still.

Anyways, does anyone actually have experience with these gear sets on the street?

I have a 4.1 rear end now with my t50...I took off in 2nd gear (which is taller than TRD 1st gear) and it was sort of doable, but definitely would get me stuck on a hill.

I have the 2nd set in my car the one with 2.630 1st I'm running this with a 4.3 rearend.

The close ratio gearset is fine for everyday driving. I especially like the longer first gear as it allows me to use the extra torque from my 4agze. However, you do lose a little bit of acceleration as the longer first with give you ~10kph/1000rpm so if your engine lacks torque you might want a higher ratio rearend.

Thanks a lot Tom. No issues starting on a hill? I have a slightly grippier clutch. I am using it with a 20V, which is actually reasonably torquey. My only concern was whether the car would have trouble taking off with a little 1.6 liter and high compression. your feedback is encouraging though. Thanks.

your car came stock with a a 1.6l with half the power. it could take off fine on a hill before, should be doable now.

sounds like you have a HD full faced clutch not a paddle clutch? means you can ride/slip it a bit when taking off without a issue.

one question is depending on the specs of everything else is the money better spent else where? and will standard JDM ratios do the job?

I never had a TRD gearset when I had the 16V in so just because it took off fine then doesn't really answer my question. Just FYI, the stock gear is a 3.6, the new first would be a 2.6...big big difference. 1st gear can take me to 75 km/h or so with a 8200 rpm redline.
