Car - AE85 converted to AE86 4AGE

motor - 4AGE bigport

use - Personal

problem - Have searched the forum before anyone asks :) Here is the sequence of events:

Saturday evening -
1) have not started car for abt 2 weeks, went to start it and would not crank so thought battery was weak, got out my portable jumper thingy and the car started up, although I sensed that the starter motor sounded slightly weaker than normal. Starter motor was new when the 4AGE was installed.

2) Car ran fine after starting, hooked up a battery charger to the battery after that to charge it up.

Sunday
1) Discovered a leak at the bottom of the distributor, so swapped over a spare unit I had. Went to start the car, would not crank. Hooked up the portable jumper thingy but still would not crank. Dash lights all remain on. immobilizer can be turned off, but radio (if left on) and clock go out when key is fully turned.

2) Checked all fuses in engine bay and cabin, none were broken.

3) Went to get a new battery, installed it, same thin, turn key fully with immobilizer off, no sound, no clicks nothing.

4) Swapped back the old distributor, still same issue. Called my usual mechanic and he says that swapping the distributor should not cause the starting problem that I am experiencing.

5) Friend came over to have a look but thought it strange that he could not find a starter motor relay in the engine bay fuse box. He says that this relay could sometimes burn out and be the cause of the problem.

occurs/started when - As above, whenever I try to start the car

personal situation - Want the solution to my problem to be cost as little as possible - who wouldn't? :)

Using a multimeter, make sure you're getting 12V at the large power wire going into the starter

Then, with someone trying to start the car, check that the signal wire is getting any reading.

If both are good, then there's something wrong with the starter.

check the lead going to the back of your starter solenoid for 12V as well when someone is trying to start it.
