View Full Version : 16v oil drain question

Ok I have a 4agze bottom end from the late model with the oil drain in the side of the block near the rear.
This used to have a smallport head which had the oil drain in the back lefthand corner.
I have now opted for the bigport head and therefore doesn't have the oil drain there.
I wouldn't think it makes any difference but it is also turbocharged.
My question therefore lies, is it ok to run the oil drain out of the oil plug gallery bung at the back of the head like this turbo PRB?
Is this a viable option or is it necessary to have the rear corner drilled and taped like the smallport so the engine doesn't have oiling issues with high revs?
The last thread I saw the person drilled and tapped it and didn't have any further issues. As far as I could find noone else has done this in there 86 on this forum. But then again most are just N/A and using smallports aswell.
I am also not going to just plug the side of the block as some have suggested as I don't think this is a reasonable decision.
Cheers

I'd go with having a bung/fitting welded to the side of the head first, if not an option then drill and tap a fitting. Opening up the plug on the top like that doesn't present any problems, but it won't work as well has having it on the side.

I know this is an old thread but my question is the same.
Im running a late model GZE bottom end with a late model bigport head (AE92)
The block has an oil drain hole from its previous smallport head.
Should I worry about getting a fitting drilled and tapped into the back of the head to drain back into the block? Has anyone done it before or not and what issues did they have?
the 4ag will be turboed and used for street driving and track drifting. I just dont want to run into issues later on.

yes get it drilled and taped in the origional place, the 4ag when turboed have an issue with over filling the rocker covers with oil and spitting it out the breather!!

How big lol must have a nice elbow on it to avoid firewall. Is that the right spot good for 4agte drifter?

Sorry bout the crappy phone pics, the lens is cracked. I'll try and get some better ones with an actual camera on the w/end.
The side was slightly milled flat then a hole was drill and tapped. I used a AN6 fitting. It could have been a larger size but oil being hot will flow just as easily down a 3/8 hole anyways. Better than not at all. My head was built aswell but we just made sure that there were no filings when we put it back together. If you mask the areas off it will make it easier.
I will also add another washer under the fitting to bring the inside flush.
I have a 45 deg hose tail for mine...when I get the next pics I'll put it on to show you.

best way to drill a hole in the head, if you need to after assembly, is to cover the drill bit in moly grease. The swarf will stay stuck in the moly grease and not fly all over the place

ok no probs, I wonder if out the side is superior?

On the 4age yes, as that side only fills up under G-forces in the direction that would force the oil out the side. The other side of the motor doesn't suffer from that problem with the large oil drains located there.

kaan i was pumping out a litre a lap in my 4agte was using the std breather tho and Always had it overfilled that was with the smallport drain design so if your pumping boost around the 20psi mark having an external drain like pictured above aswell as a big breather out of teh top of teh rocker cover

Im thinking of running two breathers like the rbs do on my 4agte, with the higher boost it pumps oil out, my catch can filled half way at g1

the PRB pic is just a vent into a catch can in case the rocker cover fills up during a major engine blow-up. i have 2 of these on my race engine.
you still need the direct drain from the base of the head casting, either at back or side works ok. you need around 20mm ID

Yea, terryo is correct. I forgot to change it in the first post.
Would making the drain go to the sump be fine or should it go to the side of the block instead? I was thinking that if it went to the side of the block you would get oil onto the crank(minor disturbance) but still at high rpm it would make a bit of difference.
