i'm sure this has been covered or possibly a silly question, but i did try searching first and didnt get the exact answer i was after. ive got a bigport 4age complete RWD setup and i need a new thermostat, i just popped down to supercheap and got whatever they had listed for the FWD ae82 bigport (was the same for almost every corolla 4age/ac). so was just wondering if this will work for my setup.

Although i would never doubt Sam's wisdom but ive tried the fwd one with epic failure.

I found that rwd setups need a shorter thermostat. 55mm v's 45mm depth if memory serves me right.

If you want a thermostat for a rwd 4age, just look at what's needed for an ae86/ae71 4ac. Same housing setup, same thermostat. (in which you will find pretty much all 4a's use the same one).

But always check the new thermostat works before installing (the amount of dud ones ive had from the shops is amazing... even genuine too!)

and make sure its a 2 way thermostat not a non bypass design

I've used both types. If you put them side by side you will find they are the same height

Sorry to thread hijack,

Could the thermostat be at fault for my water temp gauge on the cluster working the past few weeks then not working now?

No.

either the gauge, the temp sensor or the physical connection between them.

your "original" one is wrong and could of caused your engine to run hotter than wanted.

What's the difference Sam? and why does it run hotter?

Anyone know which design stant thermostats are? or know which brands are generally which design?

the first ons is a non bypass thermosta which is unlike the OEM style second one. With the flap hanging out the bottom there is nothing to block off the bypass water flow an hence you have a radiator bypass. Now this is all theoretical and it might not make any real world difference.

All aftermarket ones are like the first pic (stant, tridon, gates?? etc). All oem are like the second pic.

Used both and they work exactly the same.

thats wrong,

you can get aftermarket in either type, I can even quote you part numbers

bypass themrostats are to allow water flow when the engine is cold, not something you know from driving it, well I dont think so anyway

Just going on what I always found at each parts shop I go to (been to repco, supercheap, auto1, malz and another local auto shop), all which point to a bypass type (when looking at ae71/86 4ac, ae82, ae92 etc).

However you have jogged my memory from when I was in the exact same situation, none were like the OEM type. I did find a thermostat which was the same as the OEM style (using a measurement/dimensions table with temperature specs etc). Can't remember what it came under though, was toyota....

I shall expand as to say work means = it made no difference to the overall temperature and the way it got to that temperature. At the time, the thing which made a change was positioning of the external thermostat housing I had :)

weird that none of them had it, I have never had an issue, stupid sales staff probably

Hah can't blame them though, when the book says it that's all they can give. They scratched their head a lot when looking/comparing the two.

This was 3 years ago so things may have changed.....MAYBE!
