Car: AE86
Motor: 4AGE (does it matter though)

Thats enough of the template. Trying to decide where i should put the oil filter relocation block in the engine bay. Pretty much everywhere forward of the strut tower on the passenger side is a goer.

Here are a few examples of where others have put them:

Priority for me is on ease of access and not spilling oil all over my bay when changing.

Where would you put the relocation block? Or where have you put it?

I would put it low down, where its easy to get at from underneath.
Means less oil spillage, and filter will always have oil in it

mount off the battery tray, facing downwards so when you spill oil (you will when changing filters) it will come out easily at the bottom. a bit like the first one actually. mines just bolted there.. well out of the way and plenty of room for large rad as well.

i dont have a decent pic sorry, and the cars away from me at this time...

basically. dont you just want it pointing down? like hanging, so it doesnt drain back.

Yeah, it should have a drainback valve though. But its a good point, pointing down is also good for not draining oil all over your hands and bay when you change the filter.

Part of the problem with having it point down low on the AE86 is that the caster/radius rod brackets cover up most of the front corner of the engine bay:

Especially when you have the little blanking plate in the corner.

Unfortunately its not like it is in the Supra where you can just squeeze it in between the crossmember and the radius rod bracket:

As for the battery tray, it would be a really good spot for it... except that i dont have one.

what about just jamming it where the battery USED to be..?
that was the main reason for moving my battery so i had a metric shit ton of room for stuff.

No reason, just looking at other options.

Looking at other options for where to put the oil filter. Where the battery used to be is the default position though.

Start of that post is from another thought process though :)

bit of bling, not like he has moved it to somewhere better

Aye, in that location its even harder to remove because of the radius rod mounts.

Of course if you have a major prang, it'll munt pretty much all of it. Although if you do have a hit that bad, your oil relocation kit condition is going to be the least of your worries.

Heres mine. Easy to get both your hands around and rags underneath incase it spills

In case? Thats guaranteed to spill as soon as you take the filter off. Plus it will drain back out of the pressure side.
Its convenient though.

A little mess that can be contained in the most easiest to reach place, i think, is better than bending over the fender or lying on your back under the car trying to get it off. Oil generally comes out no matter which way the filter is.
I did have it exactly like yours in the first post but it was too annoying.

Yep. exactly where mine is, and can confirm, one small rag and ZERO mess.

I dont really understand why its badto mount it with the filter upwards? whats the REAL WORLD negative of "drainback" ? are there any other negatives?

It's not bad. When the engine is running you'll always have oil pressure so it's not gonna drain back. It will just drain back when the cars off and oil will have to fill the lines and filter when you start the car again.

My one is mounted on the strut and has a lil V thing under it so it directs where any oil will go...ill try getting a pic of it.

Unless your car is turbo and you can,'t get to the filter or you need more room, I dont see the point of an oil filter relocation kit? unless its purely for bling bling.

generally the filter relocation is used as part of an oil cooler as well.
