hey all i have a tailshaft that fits my car which has a ae71 gearbox and a t-18 diff, i wanted to replace all the uni's and center bearing as they are rooted. So after taking it to a few places they all told me that because that the uni's have peened over ends that they are a non serviceable item and that i will have to replace both the ends with new ones. They also said they could make me a one piece shaft out of 3 inch tube with the new serviceable but it could only handle 7200rpm

I know ae71 gear box to T-18 diff is common to have and was wondering what other people have done with replacing the uni's and how many people are running one piece shafts????

Cheers Wade

Dont bother, the uni's alone cost $80 on accout price. either get a custom one or use the stocker.

yea but that's the problem I'm having. In my stock tail shaft all my uni's are rooted and I need them replaced but no one wants to do them as they are the peened over uni's. They can make me a custom one but it will only be good 7200rpm and The tailshaft is the last thing I need before the car goes on the dyno and I'm unsure what rpm they are going to rev my motor to as its a 4age with adaptronic and a few other goodies, the last thing I want is it to fail on the dyno.

What are other people doing?

the tailshaft doesn't do the same revs as the motor because it has to go through the gearbox first... not sure on the revolutions at high speed though

It is possible. What i did was buy 1 special uni and bash the old one out, put new one in and tack weld the cap on. Any proper mechanic place can do that but retail i think was $120 on the uni jount.

or take your yoke to a better tailshaft shop and ask for a 1 peice in the stock length.

Also, you can ream it out to fit normal unis, i havent done this befroe but im told its what some shops do.

yea 7200 in first gear and 7200 in other gears the tailshaft would be spinning at different speeds so I'm not sure, I'm just going by what they sed

Should be able to replace the uni's and use circlips that come with a new uni. Am I missing something here? My brother and I did the one for my van.

The caps are not press fit.

well think about it this way,

4th gear is !:1 ratio... as far as im aware the closest gear to 1:1 ratio is used on the dyno.

so in 4th gear at 7200engine RPM your tailshft will also be doing 7200rpm.

yea that's correct, I'm just not sure what gear they are going to dyno it in or what rpm they are going to rev it to.

they revved mine to its 8400rpm rev limit in 4th gear
