Car - AE86

motor - 3SGE Beams

use - shed ornament/pile of expensive parts.

problem - radiator

occurs/started when - I went to fit my radiator

personal situation - just got home from work, sitting in front of the computer...

Right, I searched around for a bit but didnt quite find the answers I was looking for.

3SGE Beams recently installed in my car, the AE71 it came out of used a OEM Mitsubishi EVO 6 radiator, so I bought an alloy EVO9 one for my conversion (Same sizing, outlets in better spots)... but it's miles too tall. Looking around for another radiator to go in fairly easy.

The couple of options Ive come up with are subaru GDB/GD8 WRX but it may be a little tall, and a AE101 rad. How similar in sizing is the AE101 rad to the AE92 and AE86 rads?

Im looking for a rad that will fit in a AE86 and the Bottom outlet must be on the pass side due to the crank pulley being close to the radiator, but top outlet can be anywhere on the pass side to the centre of the radiator, and I need an option that is available in alloy. Not worried about how it mounts, anything I do will require brackets etc to be made.

Fire away.

EVO 6 and EVO 9 are the same size from what i can see?

Another option is a MK2 Golf radiator, but need to use a remote fill system.

check with brad, but he hasnt been using an oil cooler either, and the standard rad has been super sweet i believe??

and its not like he doesnt give it a canning :)

some models also have an inbuilt transcooler that might be able to be set up as an oil cooler??

i think it was like 125....??? delivered...

just looked for pics but can find any...

Already have an oil cooler kit for it. Im going to try and borrow the OEM Evo 6 radiator, see how that fits too.

I dont understand why the EVO6 rad fits an AE71 but not an AE86? I thought there were fairly close, if not the same?

yer we put the hyundai x3 radiator in my mates 86 for his ca18.

worked a treat.

there are plenty or radiators out there that suit.

just wonder through the wreckers and lift up all the bonnets and see what you can find.

or better yet, my wreckers has a huge radiator stand, with models marked on them. they are all stuffed though....but least you know what each model has..

$143 bucks bargain!

though you said alloy:

not to bad, bit exy. hmm though top rad is on wrong side....

worst case just buy one, and get the outlet welded further over. wont cost much. and you get get it perfect.

Modding the top outlet on a rad like that was another option I was looking at.

Im wondering though if the AE101 rad will fit, kinda like a AE92 one will.

from what I have seen personally an ae71 radiator support is higher than an ae86 model

that'll explain it then. Expensive mistake to make though haha.

i got an evo 6 alloy rad to fit in my 86 tight fit though
just have to dodge the webbing with the cap and outlet

my top tank is sitting about 60mm above the rad support sitting on the tension rod mounts, and then the cap on top of that. No way in hell its going in.

Ill have another look when i get home but im pretty certain it wont go.

9 Rads are slightly taller than the 6 ones too. Some of the rally guys in 9s go to the 6 rads to mount them slightly higher to reduce the chances of a stone flicking up and hitting it.

AE102 and AE92 rads are the same size from memory. S13 is another option, its far drivers side bottom, and then either passenger for the SR20 or drivers side for the CA18. Its MUCH wider though. I have a couple of spare stock rads if you need something to get you through the National too.

@ brad/steroidchickens

What hoses did you end up using? Or just grab a couple that looked right off the parts store shelves?

i used the stock rs200 radiator in mine, takes up the whole front of my 86 but just short enough

My hunch was right! I bought an AE101 alloy radiator for $185, and it'll go in with 2 new holes drilled, and OEM top mounts. Awesome.

Nice to know.

So just lower mount positioning needs to be changed?

I cut off the oem mounts and re-welded them in to suit. And then the OEM top mounts will bolt in on top.

Sweet! Well, if that Hyundai one isn't enough now we know what to upgrade to.
