ay all 86dc boys and girls

so a while back now i got a short shifter cs i think . the other day i was reading on here how bad they are and they shit them self after a bit of driving .

so with my car off the road for a while i rebuilt the shifter

1 remove gearbox boot cover
2 undo 4 bolts holding shifter in to the gearbox
3 there is a clip at the top of the shifter housing remove this clip
4 you will now be able to remove the stick from the housing
5 clean all parts with a rag
6 find a spring from a horn like i used cut down the spring and roll over shifter
7 pack housing with grease
8 place shifter back in postion
9 place clip back over housing
10 and bolt up again

i find this to take away a lot of play that shifter had before doing this

does anyone else find that they are noisy?

Ive found they tend to wreck the ring gears on the syncro. Cause the syncro hasnt slowed down enough before it selects the gear.

Personally i like the stock ones

TRD ones seem to be HELLA noisy unless they're new

C's are pretty decent :)

TRD ones don't have any dampening rubber in the shaft, so they get a bit noisy.

unless you're resting your knee on it while driving the centering springs will vibrate pretty badly.

C's are a little better, but they have a quicker throw than the TRD ones i think, which kills the boxes if you are flat shifting and that shit.

My TRD One was noisy as hell, so I put the stocker back in.

I had a C's one which worked great, but my car is a bit loud to worry about noisy parts :P

As previously stated, hit up eBay dude. Just a note, do an international search, not just in Australia. You can get one, landed, for around $50. No idea about the quality, but if you're going to hack at it I can't imagine that's going to trouble you.

I got one of the eBay ones in my 86 and not really that noisy ( iv only took it for a 20 min drive) and the top half screws on and is solid. As for the spring there was none in the kit and no way I could use the old one. It's ok tho ( for the money) but I might try and pack it full of grease and see if it will be smoother.

I bought a C's brand new back in the mid 90's, cost an absolute mint, at the same time I bought the matching C's gear knob(also cost a mint) I used these for about 10 years before going 6 speed and never gave any problems, nice and quiet etc.
