The 4A-C starter is a normal type Denso 0.8kw starter.

Some 4A-GEs came with the same 0.8kw starter, only it had a heat sheild. I don't know of any other differences. Maybe the solenoid is over a bit, not sure.

And some 4A-GEs came with the 1.0kw reduction starter. This is the one that gives the Initial-D/Camry sound on startup.

the 1kw version is that the one that looks like a normal one but has long bolts going down the outside? what about the ae92 one that looks like a 5s-fe with the aluminium housing

The 1.0kw reduction starter looks the same as what all the newer Toyotas have (because it is the same). From SV21 Camry onwards. It is sort of boxy and modern in shape, obviously a reduction starter. A larger version of the same design is used on HiLuxs and everything else. When it came on the 4A-GE/AE86 it would have been a fairly new design. Now a industry/Denso standard of what a good starter looks like. This starter also came on some AE93 with 4A-GE. You can use the AE93 one on your AE86.

The lightweight starter with the 2 external threw bolts, did not originaly come on the AE86. It came on the 20valves (but mounted on the other side). It is a reduction starter, as it has planatary gears. Some late model AE92/AE93 with 4A-GE had this starter, so if you find that one it will fit AE86 also.

way to go, I find it amazing that the small aluminium gear reduction starter is still 1kw considering the small size. Oh well all the better for me
