View Full Version : Cars with fuel filler behind number plate?

I've gotten to the point in my build looking at how to fill the fuel cell easily without having to undo a load of bolts to remove the firewall every time i run low on go juice.

Now with the fuel cells filler being in the to center of it going to the standard fill point would look like arse, as i would have to run a firewall coving the hose all the way across to one side, now I'm a bit of a stickler for symmetry so i figured that I can run it directly back to where the number pate sits and have a flip down numberplate with the filler behind it for easy access.

I attended easternats (aka yobnats) and was looking at what i think was a kingswood that had the filler behind the numberplate and little spring hinges that would work extremely well for me to use on my car.

I figure that the kingsy isn't the only car with this setup and want to know if any one can tell me what other cars have this feature so i can track one down at the wreckers and cut it out for use on a car more deserving...MINE!

XF Falcons have the filler behind the numberplate. Or my old Fairmont did at any rate.

MK2 Escort, don't think you'll fine one at wreckers though

or buy universal filler neck from racing supplies shop, and hinge number plates later

80's Gemini's had them in the rear pillar. Could be a similar set up though that can be adapted. Plus there should be heaps of them at the wreckers.

the thing that i think ill have the hardest bit finding is the spring hinges after all the rest is just a flush mount fuel cap thing

XF Falcon would be best bet. Wreckers always have a good few.

Yep, those boxy Fairlanes had them.

I know from the time I borrowed one, pulled up at a pump to fill up, crap, filler's on the other side... drive round to other side, get out, wtf, scratch head, wander round for a bit like a noob then eventually find the filler behind the number plate.

Piano hinge at the top. Simple.
