Sup guys, relatively new member here.

So like, its about 6 months until i get my P's and i am strongly considering buying an '86. The only thing that is bothering me, is if i get one, I'd want to do a 4age conversion. Now i have researched about the swap and have heard it's not that hard, but i'm just wondering if someone can give me an overview about the swap, and how much hassle it really is. Also, can someone let me know how hard the fuel pump is to do? I've heard you can use one from a VL commodore, with slight modifications, true? Any Info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!!

But going back to your original question. You can't convert to a 4AGE while on your P's.
Putting a 4AGE into a ADM AE86 requires a modplate. Don't think you'll be able to get away with it cos you in the sticks, cos I didn't.

So you've got three choices in front of you:
1) Buy a JDM AE86 that already has a 4AGE
2) Buy a ADM and spend the next few years modding everything but the engine until you're on your Opens.
3) Buy a ADM and do the conversion, but don't register it, just use it for racing

Really? I thought that conversions were legal when they are the same displacement? D:

lolwat
6th June 2011, 10:37 PM
no as its a performance inhancing mod

Stain
6th June 2011, 10:39 PM
It's legal. Just not for anyone on their P's to drive.
But yeah, to register a Australian AE86 with a 4AGE it needs a modplate for the engine conversion.

So i couldn't just tell them my old engine blew? Or make up some bs?

The same rules wouldn't apply for QLD would it?

you will fail a road worthy with a 4age and no mod plate

by two! A bog stock one and a modified one, paint them the same colour. drive the fun one till your booked, take the boring one into the inspection station and tell the inspector you can't for the life of you work out why they booked you. go back home put the plates back on the fun one. profit!!!
Also this way you have something to drive when your fun one is broken!

Yeah. I expected to be able to sneak it thru. They caught it.
Just buy a Import. You'll be getting a better car straight up.

No. No legal way to register an Australian delivered AE86 with a 4AGE conversion in your name while you're on your P's.

my 86 is rego'd with a 4age in my name on my red p's, there is nothing wrong with it as there was the option from factory to have a 4age in there. thus allowing you to have a 4age legally.

same as j's silvia's coming out with ca autos (or whatever) and your allowed to have sr de manuals on your p's as it was a option from factory.

dot is stupid but not stupid enough to let someone drive a jdm 86 standard and then an adm 86 with all jdm bits and your not allowed to drive it..

edit: first statement is only correct if you have equiv or bigger brakes and all that stuff to handle the 4age.

Stain

^^ this is not true. you got lucky and snuck it thru.

the problem is the ae86 never had a 4age factory option in Australia. yes it did in Japan of course, but never in Australia.
so you cannot legally put one in and call it a engine swap (which u can do without a mod plate)
it needs to go thru the right procedures to be legal. and those procedures mean its illegal for a p-plater to drive.

Theres 2 other points your failing to consider.

In the cities and higher populated areas, its much easier to find a mechanic and dot worker who will turn a blind eye to these things.
Where we are in FNQ, its much much harder. TruenoCoupe on here who also lives in Cairns got a RWC for his car in Brisbane - after one look at it here they tore it up.

And a JDM car with a 4AGE is "Factory" meaning unmodified. Stock.
A ADM car with a 4AGE is modded. Thats the issue, its not that they are both the same car with the same engine... one is stock, one is not.

edit: I got my mod-plate for my 4AGE without the need to upgrade the front brakes. Its up to the discretion of the engineer doing it.
