All previous tacho topics have just been how to get the tacho to work with your new engine.

I have seen a pic once of a standard tacho dash modified by TOM's to go to 9 or something like that.

We all know Takumi upgraded the tacho when he went 20v. Was he on the right track?

I have found on my car that at the higher end the tacho gets more innacurate. At 8600 it only shows to where 8200 would be. I figure this would just be a matter of getting it calibrated though. I guess you could have something stuck over the top of the existing facia.

Also if I remember correctly in Initial D they put an external tacho directly infront of the old one.

I always belived it was so the needle is pointing upwards'ish' in the main rev area of the engine. IE reving in the 4000-9000rpm range when driving

Yup. Midday is normal. Same reason flight gauges have the normal range at 12o clock.

It’s often a question of having too many things to look at instead of watching the road or the track...Sort of like being a fighter pilot with about two dozen instruments to monitor and alarms going off at the same time while the whole world is trying to kill you and you are focused on your target. Aircraft instruments often were oriented so 12 o’clock was normal. A quick glance and you would spot any needle that wasn’t pointing straight up.

In your typical stock car it’s the same. You see gauges rotated all sorts of ways so the 12 o'clock postion or "peak" is normal. The aim is to simplify things for the driver. We have to drive, not watch TV. Quick visual clues are important in battle or in racing.

yeah, much easier to tell what is what at a quick glance, and I can see the top 1/2 of the rev counter easier than the rest.
