If you unscrew the rear seats knob that is used to move the position of the upper part of the seat, unscrew handbrake button and screw the knob in handbrake, You cna use it much like a drift button usually sold for about 35$.

unfortunatly there is no real way to contest it, he was advised by others to just cop it and not waste his time any further on it..

Yeah that did happen, the one about the folded back seats, i know the dude, he had them folded down cos he had a Sub in its box but had to fold down the back seats so it would fit apparently, the sub wasnt even for that car, but he got done for it.

if you are going to use the little knob from the rear seat on the handbrake, cut it slightly shorter and drill the hole out slightly bigger in the knob.

and when you take standard button off remember to take the spring out from inside the handbrake, or the entire exercise will be pointless.

the knob made of rubber stuff so the "bolt" in the handbrake will make a new thread for you.

also, dont try to force the button to screw on. if you are twisting it hard to get it to screw on you may twist the top off it and then it will be useless.

ps. i speak from experience http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Unscrew the standard button, slip out the spring, and screw in a short self tapper with a wide washer around it. Saves threading the knob.

$35 for the knob! What moron was trying to sell it for that much....
I had a few and sold them $10 a pop to the local Melbourne boys. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

If ur not willing to take out ur rear seats or spend a couple of bucks for a knob.....
Sticky tape works just as well http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

PS: dont pm for 1. I dont have any more. try www.garage-13.com ($20each)

You don't need a drift button at all, when I go to the track I just take out the knob and the spring and when I need to put the handbrake on in the pits I reach under the handbrake and push in the little latch that holds it up, then to take it back off you just pull the handbrake a little higher and it comes undone and off you go (I'm telling you these hachi's are just made to drift http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wub.gif).

I have a better homemade solution for the "drift button" its very simple can be remove when no longer needed. I'll post a pic when I have time.

The back seat knob trick didnt work in my JDM sprinter, but worked well in my mates ADM. Like indi said the best way is just to remove the button all together (only on the track of course).

lol this mod is ghey! nah its ok really i tried it, it does work doesnt look great, it broke off in like 2days! lol used a spare one i had so didnt ruin my seats

Either way if a cop pulls you over and does the "im gonna be a prick and check how many handbrake clicks you got" your screwed anyways(melb thing maybe? they give you a canary!which means getting a full RWC), i will probably pay $20 for a real one to use when i do hit the track only.

Hahhahaha Just found this thread. Funny thing is when my trueno came off the wharf it already had the seat button (Drift Button) but at the time I thought it was the normal button cause it worked really well http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif.

But now I have a new drift button a silver one from Japan thanks to Darren http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

that seat button is possibley the best idea iv ever heard...

to add to whoevers earlier post, its quite simple to convert an AE86 to drift button.

1. unscrew handbrake button (use your fingers you pansy!)

2. remove spring, put in centre console/ashtray for later use

3. screw button back on

4. DORIFTOOOO

i did the seat latch trick on my car, but i went to the effort of tapping it out to match the handbrake rod thread, and the extra effort of using a seat latch release out of not my car.

jus get one from da Ford Telstar back seat. u dont even need to get out the spring fits in perfect. Direct bolt on fit.

Mad RS
10th April 2006, 01:38 AM
The whole point of doing this conversion is so that you can remove the spring. The flared end allows the driver to pull the button forward and engage the handbrake but it wont lock if you just pull the handbrake up.

riceburner
10th April 2006, 08:37 PM
Although TRD-86's idea is cheap and great but why when a nice shinny one is only $15-30.

Let us know how it goes dr1ft-pig, I'd like to know what they're like. They're the type that you push in to have in "drift mode", but you pull them out again and they lock like a normal handbrake button.

ive learnt with most cars if you simply take the spring out then wind the standard button back in it works fine, all u have to do is pull the stanard button out when u pull it up if u want it to lock....and it doesnt looks like a dogs breakfast
