I think the coil on my car is still the original one from 1985 or whatever. What do must people run on their's? Do u have to keep the ignitor?

yep keep the ignighter..must..i used one of those bosch coils from supercheap.. the electronic ignition type.. doesn't look like a round peice of oil filled tube.. one of the square type one.. MEC7 something i think.. not too sure, can't remember, but the ignighter apparently adapts to the coil you use..and i've heard it isn't terribly important..just get one of those ones i'm using it obviously works http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif it's black with a grey BOSCH sticker but make sure you get the one with the same fitting! cos there is 2 types.. it cost around $56 or so from supercheap..i got a discount obviously but that was the shelf price..

hope that helps http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

You mean a HEC717? I think that is the part number your talking about. I'll try and suss it out today.
Do you know how much a new ignitor is from Toyota? I take it you can only get them from Toyota?

I had a look in the Bosch Igntion Book and they don't list any coil for the AE82 or MR2 4AGE. They do list a MEC717B for the AE82 4AC.

Becuase it's getting that old now, thought u might be able to replace it with something. I ended up ordering a MEC717B. The B has a different adaption plate.

that is what i'm using.. works perfect.. the igniter will be fine.. when they break they just break..they don't fade away and get crappier..if it works it's good..

Hey matt, i disconnected the old one, connected the new MEC717, started it up and idled for about 6 seconds than died. Tried starting it again, woudn't start, so I hooked the old one back up and it just keeps cranking over, it won't start. Can u think of what is wrong?????? http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif

I just noticed that you have 1 wire coming from each negative/postive on the coil. I have 3 from the neg and 2 from the positive?

one on the right side from that veiw is the posotive side.. left side is neg..

2 cream/beige wires go to the posotive..and the black goes to the negative i'm pretty sure..use proper connectors and twist and solider wire to wire connections if your not using a male/female plugs http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif hope that helps..

p.s. the igniter has to be earthed http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Got it going with the old coil again. When I put the old coil back on to see if it worked i never earthed the ignitor. The fuse link near the battery was also blown. Im making a brace for the new coil now, hopefully the fuse link won't blow again. Thanks Matt

Hooked up the new coil just then, didn't blow the fuse again http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif I used the standard brace for the coil to earth the ignitor. I then got a little sheet of aluminum and put it between the ignitor and the brace and bent it down and bolted the coil to that. That will do now http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif
