While im thinking about it,

Im planing to take my diff apart this weekend, I havnt even gotten under the car to have a look at what diff i have (read: lazy) .. anyway Im thinking of putting some welding skills to use and locking my diff (provided it can be done?)

Has anyone had any experience in playing with stock Aus spec diffs.
If it easy or hard to pull out..
any tips / instructions would be good too http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Cheers

there easy to pull out.

but i heard they are a bit tricky to weld...

anyway
1. jack car up and put on stands
2. take wheels off and take axles out
3. un-do tail shaft bolts that conect to diff and let it drop.
4. un-do all 8? bolts around diff centre
5. un-do drain plug and drain the oil
6. take diff centre out
7. give it a bit of a clean(dont use degreaser as it will f*** your bearings)
8. weld the small cogs together in the very centre of diff
9. clean it up again (all the slag etc)
10. put it all together opposite to how you pulled it apart.

this is a quick post. but im sure there is a more detailed thread in the tech section

lol

cheers

ps. this should be in another section.

Ive welded my aus spec diff up and i can say its a bitch todo!!!
The Aus spec center has to be pulled apart (I.E. you have to take the crown wheel off and also undo the center where the spider gears live)
Its not hard, just time consuming.
I took the spider gears out (and left them out) and just welded (Read: Sh*t loads of weld) the side gears to the centre housing http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
good luck http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

BTW, my car has been locked for a couple of months now and it seems fine http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

man, you should FILL IT! not just weld the gears togther, ok it works, but i put some old bolts and stuff in there and fill the thing with weld! to neaten it up i plate the sides too. looks nice and pro! lol

puttin bolts in is to just help fill the gap, imagine fillin that gap with weld take ages

When my mate welded mine, took the centere out of the carrier. Undid the bolts on the non-crown wheel side, welded all in there, filled with bolts and stuff, welded more, didnt break for 2months, bearings failed first. He said if i was to replace the bearings, it would last longer. So I just replaced the centre/carrier with another that he welded for my friend, so ive had it for atleast 4months now, nothing has broken, this is on a S series. Lots of fun has been had with it.

puttin a square of thick steel inbetween each face of the spider gears is a good way to lock it, and smothering that shit with a mig afterwards.

yes thats what i would do.. IF i were to be as dodgy as that.. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif S seires diffs are biatches.. cos it looks like it has an LSD assy with only a few access holes if you do it to a T seires they have much bigger axles and piss easy to dodgy up i mean lock..

there is no need to block it. what DRFTAE86 did is fine...

Hmm.. it sounds like it would be esier to just throw a new LSD diff in..
Did they even make lsds for the sprinter?

most jap ones came standard with lsd but most are near death since theyre 21 years old.
can still buy aftermarket lsd's brand new.

Guess im going to have to look for aftermarket lsd center to go in my current diff (although i think the axels are busted)

You got any suggestions for aftermarket centers/diffs?

By the way, thanks for everyones input .. i originally thought that welding it up would be easy, however ive suddenly takign a few steps back to think about it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

man what a night..
after 2 hours of non stop diff discussion there really is no out right winner for me.

So i guess im just going to try and source a cheap lsd/1way then hunt for a cheap t-series that seems to be the only thing that might work.

however i heard the t-series wont last to long on a turbo engine and a fair level of drift.

hmm

correct, it will not last forever, nothing will once u treble the horsepower, if your spending the money on a turbo'd engine then spend it on the rest of the driveline aswell http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

Hey these are the spider gears not the crown wheel (the crown wheel is the bigun bolted to the diff casing)

What your mate has done there is essentially made himself a detroit locker, I don't know how common that is in the 4wd scene but I have never seen it like that before, looks pretty cool.
What it will do is differentiate for a very little bit before it locks up totally. I'm not too sure if that would be so good for the drifting crowd as on bitumen it would be really clunky and the impact loading on all the other components in the driveline might make things like axles break quicker.

its simple to just go with a weldie setup just pull out the centre and poke a welder in the little holes where the spider gears are.

Hey guys,
Iv started the mission to lock my s-series, its starting to give me the shits as i have little tech knowlegde, so far iv:
1. pulled the rear diff/axles completly out of the car
2. removed the drum caps and pads.
3. undone the bolts on the front face of the diff

Now i understand ill need to pull out the axles to removed the center of the diff, so i undid the four 14mm bolts on the plate around the axle under where the pads where but now the whole drum is free and i still cant pull the axles out,
Question time, is there anything else that fixes the axle or is it just old and tough to pull out?
thanks

biggo

thatd be the old and tough axle pull out hmm. Bet they havent been removed befor?

Anyway, just reverse the drums and use that as a crude lide hammer on the wheel studs. Should come free after a bit of a workout http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Oh yair, make sure youve drained it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

Thanks mate it was accutaly an broken axle bearing that had jammed it up.
s-series are the gay shit to lock, mine only lasted 5 corners and i totally welded the top removable spider gear to the crown wheel. And all the welds have to be grinded up flush or the casing bracket wont sit back flat. Hardest centre to weld up ever.
Everyone at the workshop it 100% baffled at how it could of broken it was the cleanest job, Will pull it back apart on Monday an give a full diagnoses. I also have another s-series centre so will be learning from our mistakes an ill post the best way to lock it up.
