View Full Version : How long does S-diff last?

I'm still running the stock S-series diff behind my 4age and it seems to be beginning to whine, or it has for awhile and it was my friend who identified it. Doesn't sound terrible but it might be on it's way out. How long do these diffs go on in this state before they need changing?

I plan to go to T-series diff anyway but that was coming a little later.

if you treat it badly it might not last much longer, but if you treat it nice or dont put too much more power through it, it should last until you get a t series.

but anyway im sure you could find someone who has a spare s series centre that you could use in the meantime if you dont like the noise.

then again it could just be the bearings

hope that made sense http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

I reckon its the crown n pinion wheel... they're probably just scuffed... cuz maybe at one stage there wasnt enough oil in there...
Does the noise come on when ur on partial or no throttle...but if u floor it... the noise goes away...? If thats ur problem... its nothin major... and should still last for a while... Just make sure theres diff oil in there...
I personally wouldnt bother fixing it... just get the money together and go for a T series...

Floor it and the noise goes away... kinda, my exhaust note hides it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It's a constant noise you can hear while cruising, not overly loud or sounding like it's falling apart or about to break, just enough that you can hear it.

Thanks for advice I'll check the oil out.

but yeh, i'd be keeping away from clutch dumps, and hard gear changes for a while.. throw a bit of oil in there.. anything diff/hipoid just to get it buy.. if you top up with lucas oil stabiliser it might queiten it down http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Change your fluid. If its a Locked S Series, most probably your Centre Bearings/ Pinion Bearings/ Pinion or Crown Wheel. I have a Locked S series, after awhile starts whining with alot of hurting, 3 drift pracs many burnouts much street hacking etc. But if its still Open Wheel I would think it would last a while. Just change your fluid and see how it goes.

I doubt that a 6month old TRD 2way would require a rebuild.

These puppies last for a long time if you run them in properly and change the oil regularly.

I've had mine for a year and its seen many track days, and it still feels as tight as it did the day I bought it.

The most common cause of diff whine is a worn crownwheel and pinon. People who fit a brand new 2way with a 23 year old crownwheel and pinion have to expect some wear to the crownwheel and/or pinion. A bit of whine tho doesnt mean its farkt...it simply means that the gears dont mesh together flush anymore (as they are worn) and hence vibrate under load.

As for S-series diffs, if you have locked one and have a 4age infront of it they should last a little while. I had one for 4 track days and lots of street sliding before it started making any weird noises. I replaced it with a 2way before it died. Open wheeled, I dont think you'll have any issues with an S-series. Of course depending on how you drive the car will have an effect on its lifespan.
