just wondering if there are any differences between the ke70/ae71 and the ae86. can all modding, engine conversion etc techniques and applications be applied to both models?
for eg. the t-18 diff into ae86 conversion. would this be EXACTLY the same for a corolla aswell?

Im not sure on the KE but the AE71 and AE86 are basically the same, many parts can be swapped over, even the diffs.

thanx. one thing i do know about the ke70, the engine bay is different.

I dont think so, i have a KE70 and the only difference between a KE70 and AE71/AE86 is the following that i know of......
KE70 has cable clutch instead of hydraulic
KE70 has a cross member for a 4K motor

the struts are slightly differant. differant stub axle angle. but ae86 struts are compatible.
to convert a ke70 to hydralic clutch as mentioned you can either use ae71 parts or ae86, though ae86 parts will be a little more difficult, some messing around with elongating holes ect.
also gearbox x-members are differant.

specifcally the diff. it is actually a more logical choice. t18 = te72 so it is still E series chassis and the quick almost the same generation. so yes it will definately fit.
theres is the slight possibility that hand brake cables may be an issue but no one has ever mentioned it before.

i think the t18's are shorter? but u should beable to use the h/b cables from the old diff
u all so need the t50 or similar gbox for a 4a block
edit: not sure about the t18 tailshaft? might need the ae86 front end of the tailshaft and t18 rear end of the tailshaft (about 2cm shorter than the 86)
or get the ke70 tailshaft to suit the t18 diff?

Diff and tailshaft compatibility is a bit of an issue between different early 80'
Corollas.
S-Series or T-series Diffs cannot easily be fitted into a KE70 behind a K-series gearbox. S-series and T-series are easily interchangeable, but P-series or k(?)-series (Borg Warner KE diffs), are not. The tailshaft lengths, PCD of holes on the diff plate are different. KE tailshafts are a two piece tailshaft, however the two pieces are not bolted together and hence cannot be interchanged to achieve correct lengths and bolt patterns.
I am not very certain as to what diffs are in an AE71, but I assume its an S-series, and therefore can be modded as you would your AE86.
When changing over to a different diff, in most cases its best to use your original handbrake cables.
Engine wise, most K, T or A engines can fit with not too much hassle into any early 80's corolla or spoonter.

Is the AE86 pedal box interchangable with the AE71 automatic? Just need to know as i have a chance to buy a '71 auto, and will need to convert to manual.

The AE71/KE70 diff is a Borg Warner diff, not an S-series. They both directly bolt in though. I'm pretty sure the S-series and Borg Warners have the same diff flange though?
For bolting in a T-18 diff, If you're using a T-18 T-50, then you need the entire tailshaft. If you're using a AEXX T-50, you need the front half of an AE86 tailshaft mated to the rear half of a T-18. The spline outputs on the back of these 2 gboxes differ.
Also the KE70/AE71 engine bay IS slightly different the a Sprinter. It's a bit shallower, ie the firewall is a few cms further inwards. The widths are identical though seeing as you can use ae86 strut braces on ke70s.

i have done this conversion, using almost all sprinter parts from my old wreck.
you need the following to convert to sprinter spec!
AE71 crossmember or AE86 crossmember
AE71 gearbox mount, or slightly modified KE70 mount works
AE86 struts bolt in, they have thicker strut tube, but allow you easier access to aftermarket, suspension, ps arms, RCA's etc
AE71 manual pedal box to convert to hydraulic clutch, AE86 one won't fit
T18 diff fits, use t18 handbrake cables
sprinter rack is the same
you can use sprinter swaybars
one thing to note with the t18 diff into a ke70 is that the t18 brakes are significantly larer than the standard ke 70 ones, i used the AE86 master and booster so i didn't have a problem with it i only realised when a mate did the same and he complained of locking rears all the time. if you were to change the master you would be sweet.
turbo coupe has the tailshaft issue sorted, don't need to go over it again.
i found the engine bay to be longer in the nose as the sprinter bay loses some room due to the headlights etc being fairly deep compared to KE70 ones and KE70's don't have the massive open area behind the front bumper
seats will bolt in from a sprinter
dash won't
rear seat bottom half will but doesn't fit well
consoles won't unless you make new brackets
an exhaust off a sprinter (4AGE) will bolt straight onto a (4AGE) KE70
all the mountss are exactly the same under the floor

AE71 is even easier as it already has 4A subframe and gearbox mount, it already has hydraulic clutch, also it's fitted with a weaker version T-50, i've had one of these behind my 20v for about a year and it's still alive! AE71 saves heaps of trouble as you don't have to do nearly as much work and you can reuse the gearbox. the only reason i did a KE70 was that i had the parts to make it work and it was the first car i found.
