1st things that come to mind..... (take note that I only have experience with the 16V)
but the obvious pros/cons

-16v cheaper than 20v when both in stock form.
-16v easier to fit
-more aftermarket parts readily availible for the 16v I believe

Im sure other members will have more fuel for thought.....

I reckon 20v's have wider and flatter torque band compared to 16v... even with vvt disabled... a simple cam/cam gear change and well tuned ecu on a 20v would crack 100kw at the wheels where as the 16v would need a bit more work done to achieve the same result. If ur a experienced engine builder and you build the motor yourself, u can make more hp for less money with a 16v. Both engines have similar maximum potencial if you were to go all out.

I've got a BT 20v with some cams etc. and i'm very happy with the way it performs. Even with around 190hp at the fly (105kw@wheels), the engine is very driveable. The torque is very flat and the quad throttle body engine response is instant. Compared to a stock 16v engine, i have more torque anywhere between 2000-9000rpms... and this is with vvt disabled. On a recent dyno day, my engine matched the stock 2zz (141kw Sportivo) and B18 (142kw DC2R) in peak hp with MORE torque between 4000-6000 rpms. I think a typical 16v with similar peak power would produce less torque at lower revs, although this is just a personal opinion, not really based on any hard facts. End of the day it all depends on the cam combination and how the engine is built/tuned.

20v's is definately a more difficult conversion... but its gettin much simpler these days with many people making conversion kits etc. Also the prices of silver tops have droped a lot which make them good value for money too!

Value for money... go the 16v! If you want a more of an all round performer go the 20v!

Stock 16v 65-75 kw @ wheel
Stock AE101 20v 75-85kw @ wheel
Stock AE111 20v 80-90kw @ wheel

a 20V is much harder to fit however they can be real cheap to get and I can slaughter a normal 16V with mne and thats a stuffed engine

if you want to keep your car NA and can afford it a 20v makes ALOT of sense.

that ontop of the fact that it is ALOT easier to find a 20v in good condition at a good price than trying to find a nice 16v also contributes to the 20v being a good choice.

obviously they make more power, plus they look nice http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

converting the 20v to rwd is a little more difficult than a fwd 16v, but if you have a look at the threads that are sticky'd at the top of this section, youll find everything you need.

ultimately though their potentials are similar, though their characteristics will always be differant.

i am at the beginings of a fairly mild NA 16v build up right now, basically a rebuild with a few little tricks in the bottom end, plus some basic porting, cams and a set of quads.

no matter how hard i try, i cant make it seem "cheap". i will most likely not have any more power than if i just bought a 20v and put some cams in it. i have some unique reasons though to choose 16v, that are most likely not applicable to you.

so the "smart" choice is definately 20v.

Pfffft .... they're both the ghey!

4AFE is where it's at for power.

Here's one that makes 248hp.

you think you can just walk in here and show boat like that huh! well youre welcome to anyday.

good luck to you and chris in that race. we did our best to get that computer (actually ant did) ready.. seems like the hardware turned out to be right, just needed some changes in the settings.. old map/new hardware incompatibilities..

Thanks heaps for trying to get that running mate!
Yeah, Chris is here right now and we're going to go testing in a couple of hours.
