Hey there,

I have a t18 rear end in my sprinter and have put a 2way lsd of unknown brand (out of a ta22) and my left axle is leaking. I have replaced the seal, but to no avail, as it is still leaking.
I remember reading that you need to shave the axles down a bit, but am unable to find the post that contained the info. (tried search, but couldn't find it) If anyone knows how much I need to remove, or where I can find the info, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

James B.

Dave, that's rubbish.

Your axle should slide "freely" all the way into the diff. It'll be a little tight as you push the bearing in, but you shouldn't need to clamp the bearing in by torquing up the backing plate.

I have also heard around 6-7mm should be shaved, however I have no recollection of the source or accuracy of this.

if your using T-18 axles you shouldn't need to shave anything..

really? i have to admit i dont have any experiance, but i always thought you had to trim down your axles a little when putting an lsd in an NA diff.

you could ask this on club4ag.com think youll get a pretty quick answer there.

they all have disc brake rear ends over there though so maybe the information/method isnt applicable.

i have never had to with my TRD 2 way..t-18 axles pop straight in.. no probs.. with RA40 ones you need to cut them down to t-18 size.. (less3-4mm) and then pop straight in http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

AFAIK we wernt talking about the axles from the JDM diff.. Zenki/Kouki etc etc..

just the length of the axles in a T-18 type diff assey with a LSD in..

i was referring more to of this

"Non-LSD axles CAN BE SHORTENED to be used as LSD axles for the corresponding year.

I have done this numerous times for application with both of my LSD's as well as those of my friends. An angle grinder with a cut-off disc will have the job done within a minute or two. Keep in mind you only need to remove approx. 5-8mm off the end of each axle, and after you make the cut, be sure to taper the end so it looks just like it did before you cut it."

Sorry I just assumed t18 diff would have "non-lsd" axles

yeh the t-18 has non LSD axles..

what diff housing are you putting it in?

its all in a T18 housing, using the gearset from a ta22 diff (4.11 goodness)

Also, the right axle slides in and out easily, but the left has always been rather tight (need to use drum rotor as a rudimentary slide hammer) to remove and install. I'm going to check it all out when I get the car back from the autoelec and make sure there isn't anything that would cause it to be stiff.

It may not be the length of the axle that is the problem, if it is bent slightly (which can happen through removing by smashing a brake drum with a hammer) this will cause the diff to leak at the end seal. I've had the same problem http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif
try to find a replacement axle and see if this fixes it

Haven't been hitting the drum with a hammer. I pull the drum off, turn it around, and put it back on with two wheel nuts done up loosely, then use the drum as a slide hammer. It is always pulled with equal force, not hit on one side then the other.
