my question is regarding the crown wheel and pinion swap in t series differential centres.I amconsidering purchasing a 4.3 ratio crown wheel and pinion from laws at AJPS, however ive never dealt with centres ever and want to know whether its a unbolt bolt in affair?.Or there is some more work neede to do the conversion?.anyone with any info or has done this would b a great help to me.

thank you ae86dave.

lapping a diff in proply isn't the most easiest of things.. it's easy for someone who does it every day.. i have never done it personally.. but i know that you need to have an existing 4.1 center at least, cos the 3.7 T series has a different bolt pattern on the plate to the C/wheel..

so the 4.3 will only bolt into a 4.1 centre?

in essence yes.. Nathan has done it.. i'm sure of it.. i had to give him a 4.1 locker , so he could pull it apart, and use the 4.3 gears in it..

which reminds me.. Nathan, Troy is bugging me about the locker i gave him, that ended up with you! hahaha.. ahem... sorry.. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

dad is a mechanic, and firmy said no when i asked about changing the gears in my diff. apparently they are shimmed to the correct clearances, and it costs about 600 for a diff specialist to do.

I got to get mine reset as well as it wasn't set to a correct clearence when I had the LSD put in. Get it done properly as it will annoy the crap out of you when its not right.

$600.... i don't think so.... that's highway robbery.. take your diff somone else..

if you don't feel comfortable doing it.. give a diff/transmission place a call.. ask how much it is to chuck it together..

Its not that difficult, I have done it twice.

The hardest thing is to set up the pinion height. You basically have to set up the whole diff first then look at the pinion contact patch on the crown, if its right then great, if not pull the whole thing apart change the shim on the pinion and start again.

You will need a press, in/lb torque bar, ft/lb torque bar and some other jigs to hold the diff while you are doing the work.

The simplest thing is to take it to a diff place $250 is more like the going price for that sort of work.

an afternarket centre is already looking the better for a few bucks more.

it does not matter if you are fitting an aftermarket centre or just a crown & pinion, it all has to be reset. any competent diff shop will handle it. about 2-3 hrs work if no hassles. expect to replace most of the bearings at the same time. most the ones we do end up at about $450 including bearings & seals.

nathan and i went through this saga recently with my diff
trying to fit 4.1's when i broke my 4.3's
it all bolted in no problem (but we used the 4.1 nosecone)
and we took it to his mate who is a diff rebuilder and he set the "Backlash" which involves tapping on the threaded bearing thingies that move the centre in and out (closer and farther away from the pinion)

you have to get it just right so that it doesn't "bind" which is when it expands from the heat, the tolerance becomes zero and no oil can get into the gears

and not to loose so its noisy
