hi does any1 know for sure whether the 4ac is an interference or non-interference design?..that is if the timing belt snaps will it damage the valves etc.?...and any1 knows how often i should replace the belt?60000Km or 100000 km?

im 90% sure they're non-interferance.

as with i'm fairly sure ALL toyota timing belt motors (at least the ones i know (not the new ones)) are all non-interferance

Yeah they are definately a non interferance design.

(I bought a AE82 with a broken belt, changed it and it went no worries) http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

I'm pretty sure they are specified as a 60,000 belt but will

go to 100,000 without dramas http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

My brothers old AE71 had a broken timing belt when we bought it, Didn't take too long to replace. Quite an easy job to do yourself if you have some mechanical ability.

get engine to TDC
undo crank bolt
pully off
plastic covers off
undo the 10mm bolt on the tensioner
hold tensioner to the side
take belt off..
at this point you can change the cam seal (recommended)
and the tensioner (if you buy a timing belt kit you get one with it, and a cam seal)
put the new belt on, making sure the marks at the top of the cam gear and cover are lined up, and the key on the top of the crank is at the top still..
do up the tensioner so the belt is tight.. not insanely tight.. just nice and firm..
covers on.
pully on..
away you go http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

thx guys..yea i did a google search how to replace it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif ..anyway..i got the other belts on as well...the fan n aircon belt..so gotta take those off before i can start taking the crank pulley out...btw when u undo the crank bolt, will it turn the engine as well?..coz to get to the TDC u turn the crank bolt clockwise?..

Yeah mate changed it my self just make sure the marks are lined up and

you won't have a problem. You will need a rattle gun or a big breaker bar

to undo the central bolt on the Harmonic balancer (big pulley on the bottom of

the motor) just make sure you don't round it off. Mine had been rounded off

by the previous owner/owners mechanic and i had to weld a bigger nut over the

top of it just to get it un done

if it is too tight sometimes i setup the spanner against the swaybar etc.. and flick the key undoes it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif then get it on TDC..

but be carfull i haven't had it heppen to me.. but i know sometimes you can snap the head off.. so maybe a bit of WD-40 soaking in it for a bit would help
