View Full Version : A probing question

When I first got my car there was some sort of probe dragging on the ground under the front passenger seat. I couldn't see where it had been attached, but it had some fencing wire through the screw holes, so I hooked it back to the chassis rail.

It was connected to the factory harness with by brown and green wires, but when the car was finally delivered up north, the probe was GONE. Anyone know what it is? I'm thinking it was either the external sensor for the climate control, or could be the O2 sensor for the cat (when it had one).

Artists impression below.

There is also a warning light with some kanji that I can't read - what does it mean? Are the two related?

It is my understanding that the warning light signifies that the cat con is not at operating temp. To do with emissions control. Jap cars have a temp sensor on the cat con, perhaps that is what was falling off. I used that light in the dash as my handbrake warning lamp. Told the RWC guy that it was japanese for 'handbrake on' after i wired it in that way.

Thanks guys. Ok, so my next question is - does it matter? Does the computer use this input for anything, or just for the warning light?

no it doesn't matter.. i had the same thing in my 86 when i imported it.. your car will run fine without it.. you can even chose not to run the other o2 sensor.. you won't notice any difference.. other pll will say otherwise.. but i know from experiance.. they don't really depend on them like some cars do..

That's good to know - engine runs great, but the dragging probe concerned me. Won't have to worry about replacing it then.
