Hey all, i want to put a 20v into my AE86. But i don't want to cut the fire wall for the distrbutor to fit. What are my options? What do i need and how much will it cost?

can either bash the firewall so the distributer fits or take it off and use the base of the dizzy as a CAS and run individual coils with a DLI box (available off Slydar/anthony kellam) and extra igniters if you want to use the original computer, or just run an aftermarket computer. if you decide to use the original loom you have to extend a few wires as well. there are other ways of doing it but just do a search and youll probably find them

You can use 4agze coil packs but you need to run it with an aftermarket ecu.
Do a serach for it on these forums.

Also there are some cooling issues as well, read this guide:
20v rwd cooling (http://www.sq.id.au/auto/cooling/20vrwdcooling.html)

Cheers

I understand the cooling problems. Just if i can avoid cut the firewall for the cooling then i would want to avoid cutting for the distributor. Seems pointless to cut the wall for one problem and not the other. If you get what i mean. How much do the individual coils and DLI box cost? Plus what does the DLI box do.

you don't have to bash the firewall much, only half an inch or so.

just go aftermarket management

Just follow the guide posted above.
No need to bash the fire wall..

just run coil packs and aftermarket ecu.

its pretty much all there, pinned at the top of this very section.

we do the dli box so you can run coil packs on your factory ecu if you want.

but the better option is programable ecu, because youll make more power too.

the best way to do a 20v is save money on the engine and just buy a silver top cut out motor (just the engine with a cut loom not a half cut) and then use programable managment. youll make more power than a black top on factory managment, and just as much as one on programable.

what is the thing that makes people want to do a 20v conversion instead of a 4agze or 4age. like what are the benifets?

if you are planning a 20V conversion make that a blacktop.. personally I'm not a big fan of force induction, NA engines are just more predictable....

if you can get an NA motor to provide enough power/torqe, why would you ever need to go FI?

NA just has so far few headache's for a racing engine, and as SLYDAR says, the silver top will do all that a blacktop will do with a PEM. the only downfall with the silvertop is the use of an AFM. but this can be done away with if you are planning on using aftermarket support.

why does it have to be black top? i totally disagree and i am coming from a fairly experianced perspective?

people choose 20v because the engines are newer, and easier to get, make good power, and look nice.

gzes are hard to get now and are expensive and aging.

a small port is a nice option but also hard to source

big ports are just getting older and therefore hard to find in good condition.

GTE is a much bigger job and gearbox strength becomes a big issue and added expense. this can also be said about gzes too.

Cheers slyder, that was a great help. I think i'll use the stock ecu option untill i get a bit more money. I'll pm you in the future about puchasing the equipment. How much do you think this will all cost?
