So ive got an interview with Nova corp. in sydney next week.

I'm planning on spending next year over there teaching English.

the interview sounds pretty scary, mostly cos they'll be checking out my uni transcript which is shithouse.

any of you done it or looked into it? got any tips or advice that could help me? both in securing a spot, and what to expect regarding conditions and expenses?

cheers, macca

With seek, they find a job for us over there, cover the bond on our apartment, cover our air fares and everything, plus coz m 19 i don't need uni and im doing the course online via correspondence. I shopped around a fair bit and this was the best one for us, plus because my boyfriend and i are both doing it, we are getting about 40% off both, like a bulk buy thing

When I was there last year I stayed with a new zealand dude who I met in a surf comp .
Turned out he was an english teacher ..who completly winged it (no qualifications) and scored a job ..He told me its easy as to get work and teaching basic english need no previous schooling .
He had an awsome life over there ..heaps of time off and was on pretty good coin . Told me to come over and He'd get me work peice of piss .
I've been considering it ever since .
If ya get stuck and don't already have a location in mind already I'll give him a call and try get ya some work !

/\/\ awesome, thanks everyone....

first step is trying to make a decent impression at this interview i guess. but yeah, nova is the first company ive applied to, so ill check out the others you've all mentioned, and then worst case scenario ill get desperate and try winging it, cos i am dead set going over next year no matter what.

need a change of scenery, not to mention decent pay. so yeah, thanks again. any tips on the really formal interviews and how to approach them would be ace too.

and then i can be posting next year from ebisu lol, and scavenging parts for you all http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

You only really need the uni degree to get a full time working passport. Without a degree youre only allowed to work part time, but I'm sure some people wouldnt mind employing you full time. But that wont be a problem for you. Another good thing to have is a TESOL or ESL certificate. The course doesnt teach you shit tho so you may as well just make up a fancy certificate and find someone to print it.
I'm teaching in China at the moment and I'm on about the equivilent of doctors salary. I heard the salary in Japan is decent but nothing special. If you're interested in China I can tell you about what its like here.

it would help if you can speak basic japanese or whatever language you need but you only speak englishi n the class room

Jessi

Yeh I was told I only need to learn enough Japanese for my personal life over there, and that most I would pick up in the first few weeks anyways, not acctually allowed to speak Japanese to the students

Doctors wages in China, which is not a lot in Australian but in China I'm a rich and very elligable man http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/greenbounce.gif
Over 6 months I can still live very well and should save about $5000 Australian by the end so it's not so bad.

Any advantage in having a formal teaching qualification? I'm in the first year of a 2 year teaching degree (my second degree) and am thinking of doing the Japan thing in a couple of years. Of course my specialisation is English and SOSE...My partner would be well suited though I guess, she is about a month off finish her B-teach, specialising in English and LOTE (Japanese).

Teaching qualifications will definatly be an advantage but you don't need them to get a teaching job.
I'm halfway through my uni course and having a year off to teach, so I don't have a degree. To get a decent job you will probably need a TESOL (or equivilent) certificate, but like I said the teaching course doesn't teach you anything you won't learn in in the first week or so. If I could do it again I'd just make up some certificates and tell them I'd done the course and save myself $1500.
If you want I could put up the teaching manual you get and pics of the certificates so you can look at them.
To find a job the best way is to go through a recruiter or just look on the internet. The best site for jobs in China is http://www.eslcafe.com/. Google search for info on Japan.

From what I've seen and heard the government isn't as bad as most people in Australia think. True it's not a great government, but its not going to do anything to a foreigner as long as you don't do anything you shouldn't.
I think it would be a totally different country to Japan but the only thing I really miss is driving and sometimes the modernness.

well thanks to all for your input. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tup.gif

had my interview today and it went well i think. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

pretty bizzarre role play and mind games during it all, kinda odd when the white chick starts pretending to be a jap student and you have to explain shit to her like she's a retard. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif

but yeh as soon as i graduate in december they'll be able to get my working visa rolling. im eligible for the sponsored position.. the woman ran the numbers and after rent, reasonable living expenses (including some nights out), tax, compulsory health insurance theres still a spare 900 a month in a typical case, so over the year thats like 10 grand which can be saved without trying too hard at all. and ill look for cheaper accommodation pretty much straight away as well http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

do i hear yahoo auctions much?! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

anyway shouldn't get ahead of myself. they'll let me know for sure in about 15 days. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

I think you just give them money and they give you something that says you have the equivilant of a BA degree. I don't really know how it works, it sounds dodgy but apparently its legal. I guess it looks good on resumes and you can get full time working visas in places like Japan/Korea/United Arab Emirates (the best money you'll make teaching English) etc.

hmm i know with my application that they dont settle for a piece of paper. they want an original copy of ur transcript ie. not the bachelor certificate, but the actual list of all the subjects studied including dates and marks scored in every subject.

yeh it costs 3 years of ur life and 10 thousand plus. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/fap.gif if ur implying the piece of paper certificate can be bought, good on ya, but its not worth the paper its printed on.

im just finishing commerce wit economics major. spent 4 years doin it and will owe prolly 20G+ in HECS debt.

biggest waste of time and money there is. stupidest move to make imo. havnt learnt jack shit at uni. all ive done is destroy my liver.

but having a degree enables a full time overseas working visa, and hey, i wont be paying back HECS nor paying the aussie tax man a cent while im gone. so thats some consollation.

This is true. I haven't learnt shit I couldn't have learnt better on the job, apart from how to use different computer programs. I'm just scared that if I don't finish uni there'll be something down the track (like maybe a Japanese working visa) i won't be able to get. Plus a BA degree looks good on any resume.
