LSD Conversion???

I was browsing Rollaclub forums early this morning and stumbled upon this thread..

So to my small amount of research I did, this form of mechanical locked diff works very much the same like the Phantom Grip type device. But regarding to the phantom grip device, I read on Club4ag that the spider gears had to be shaved down a fair bit. So that's the only drawback I could find in such a device.

Anyone wanna shed some light on wether this is a feesible was to get a cheap LSD type device in the AE86.

I think it would work quite well, but I think the guy is dreaming expecting it to last in a BW diff with a gze up front!

I doubt a phantom grip type diff setup would be possible in an S-series centre. They are 4 pinion and only have tiny inspection holes, so there is no way of getting any plates or other crap into the diff centre.

T series would be a better base to look at. S-series I can't see working.

Hmm, you do have a good point about the inspection hole dealy.

But i was under the impression that the s-seried is able to be pulled apart when ya remove them 8 bolts just above the inspection hole. The ones on the right side of the pic.

either way, its an interesting idea to possibly get a cheap LSD style diff under a budget.

onto of that, i know that if you lock an s series eventually that top hat of the diff centre that is held on with those 8 bolts you just mentioned, will break off :S when you weld an s series, if you want it to last, you weld that top plate on aswell.

what im getting at is i think the extra strain from using this mechanism will cause the top hat to break off in the same way as welding it does.

Sure, you can pull it apart, but there is basically no room inside there to fit plates or any other gear. Plus from what I've seen you need to fit some bits, then pull out a couple of clips to release the springs once the diff is assembled. No chance of doing that with an S series.

I'm not sure about this but using a really really^2 high viscosity diff oil can create the same effect right? lol

Yes, I used an extremely high viscosity diff oil in my S-series and it gave the same effect as a VERY tight LSD. I think it was called "several metres of MIG wire", available from your local BOC centre or any other industrial supplies place.
