Just a question to all who have done painting to there car.
Im currently in the process of sanding down 4 doors the front guards and the bonnet for a respray of similar color to the rest of the car (the basic red that 84 corollas come in)

It doesnt have to be the most immaculate job in the word, but since im putting the effort in i want it to look half decent and most of all i dont want it to fade, flake or anything out of the ordinary.

For this reason i had planned to get a compressor and spray gun and paint them all this way obviously with some car paint and clear coat.

i just did some rust work on my rear guards and just painted them up with $2 super cheap paint and clear coat, however i used quality etch primer. The finish turned out alot better than i expected.

OK to my main question:

If i go ahead to save some cash and just use paint cans to paint my doors and guards, while using etch primer and decent clear coat, am i going to regret it?
Im sure if i do it it the finished quality will be more than satisfactory, however, i do not want to to fade away or flake or whatever within a month or two. Here is an example of what i definately dont want to happen:

This started looking like this about a month after i painted it, however it was done with cheap primer and clear coat. As well as i didnt sand after coats and things like that.

To everyone thats read this and attempted to help out i appreciate it, i do realise that my questions are always longer than the bible and websters dictionary put together as one book.

Cheers

Grant

dont use any imported spray cans, there is an austrlian brand called Ultra colour and they seem to be unusually good quality. I did part of my steering wheel with it years ago and it still looks glossy. By the way if you want a more fine mist heat the can till its hot to touch and then mix it for 10 seconds.

Can get nice spray job with cans, just nice and even strokes and put it on thick.
Cos spray gun puts on twice as much as pissy little can

yea sounds fair enough, cheers
the other thing is that previous painting i did had very little coats, and i think i did about 4 or 5 on the rear guards. Not sure if the paint from super cheap is Aus or not. just their normal brand of paint i guess

do it once , do it properly man... use the gun and compressor.. over a big surface area you will never get a good finish with cans.... touch ups yes, but dont use them for a respray.. you will regret it believe me...

Cos spray gun puts on twice as much as pissy little can

depends on what setting you have the gun on & what mix you have.

If you have access to a compressor & a decent gun then $300 will set up you with a good primer & 2pac to do the whole car. Cans are ok but hard to blend evenly....on the flip side a gun will run easier if you arent careful

cans are cheaper so if you stuff it up its not too bad i guess but if it were me i'd do it once & do it properly

im only painting the panels of the car that are removable. If i was doing the whole car (ie masking up and stuff) compressor and paint gun would be definately use no questions asked.

Fair call on the do it properally, do it once.
Just really tossing this up, cause all the cash put into hiring the compressor, however much paint i need etc could go towards suspension bits for the track when with cans itll probly cost me like $50.
Just keeping in mind that the car is a 84 corolla track car

The other thing too is even if i use a compressor etc, i have to do this outside in my back yard, so i guess thats another thing that will effect the quality. As well as i havent used a paint gun before etc.

just make sure you fix the panel damage.. then paint.. no point in the paint if the crases and dents are all over it lol! and where are my drinks! lol jokes..

i just finished doing a panda job on mine yesturday using cans. came up almost floorless! its slightly possible that im a 1/2 decent painter http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif only thing i would do differently is do it all in one hit cos now i have to ever so slightly sand where 2 parts have met and it has left a slight blemish. so a slight sand and hit it with clear coat will be seeing an almost perfect can job.

im going to paint the rest of the car ferrari red. my original 24 year old unfaded paint job is just boring and needs a modern touch.

The doors i have a floorless and have no damage, the front right guard is being replaced due to it being pretty much rooted, as well as the guards are flaired and boged so itll be pretty shmick.

im sorta leaning towards the spray can way of doing it, this is mainly due to i know what im doing with those, itll be alot cheaper as well as the paint job doesnt have to be great as long as it looks relitevely fresh for a while.

Is there anyone that has painted their car using cans, however used decent primer and clear coat(as in how yosimitsu has done), and the paint started to fade or crack etc due to the quality of the paint?

i did a panda as well using cans sprayed on top of old paint, just gave it a good clean beforehand and then primer and top coat..no clear coat as i didnt want it to be more shiny than my original paint on the other parts of the car..i did the front quarter panel about 3 months ago and then finished the rest of the car 2 weeks ago..they look the same so no noticeable fading in the 2.5 months..chips quite easily..i think coz i sprayed a very thin layer and no clear coat on top as well..but its chipped due to stuff hitting it, like maybe a screwdriver accidentally jammed into the body or dropped onto it..no stone chips so far though

The cans are fast and cheap and work. just prep it properly and if ya want it shiny put that clear coat on. but make sure u give a it a light sand off to get it smooth, if it already isnt, i think it helps the paint get in there aswell. I'm currently sanding my bonnet back then doing a panda on the sides for a subtle look with the original blue http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/happy.gif

i put clears on the front bar coz the little dimples weren't sanded off and that will give it a little bit of shine, then didn't put clear on the body parts and they came up pretty much the same amount of shine..so the whole car actually has somewhat similar shine although its not perfectly the same

FYI, cars can look fairly respectable with no clear, if its a glossy colour, and i mean good quality paint, then you can get away with it

Ive heard that for bonnets spray cans are too hard to get an even coat over the whole surface and they're better for the smaller surfaces.

I think if i use spray cans the car will come out with the effect that i want. At least also if i decide to do the whole car a better color later on (I do plan to if i keep the car long enough) i havent wasted $200 or so on paint...

Other reason too is that i know what im doing with paint cans and the process would go as this

Sand 60 grit
Sand 120 grit
Clean
Prime - 3 coats
Sand 600 grit
Clean
Paint - 6 coats
Alow appropriate drying time
Clean
Clear coat 3-5 coats

hopefully with that process, if i use cans it will last a decent amount of time and come out relitively ok

Thanks heaps for everyones advice so far

I tried the rattle can on a hood for a stupid honda, and it actually worked out pretty good! it just depends on the quality of the paint. I personally perfer to use urithane paint. it's the same paint used on aircraft. i got a bunch for free from a person that owed me and i just painted my 86. it came out REALLY good. i wish i was there, i'd hook some of you up with some good quality paint.

a while ago i went to supercheap and grabbed one of those $99 compressor 'packages' which came with a spray gun.. combine that with some 2K paint/thinners/harder... paint job for under $250 to my old mans AE92 rolla... just make sure you where a decent mask... that 2K stuff apparently kills you.. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

hell yeah 2pac is nasty nasty shit. get a good mask. they aren't that much. about $40-55.

make sure you've got clean rags, wax'n'grease remover (prep sol), and air gun is handy for knocking off dust after sanding, before wax/grease remover. You're plan sounds good. It's only worth doing a $$ paint job if you are going to baby/keep the car for ages. It's just a money pit otherwise. My best mate just did his Karmann Ghia, bare metal 2pac black, end bill was around $20,000 including rust/fab work. Ridiculously good job by pro coach builder/restorers, but yeah he'd want to keep that thing for the next 20 years! You'd never do that to a hachi, but I think you're on the right track. Bugs and shit will be a problem every time out in the open, but pick a still day, and a warm day! also make sure you use good cans. If you're going hoodride style, then at least spend $10 on each can. It will still be a cheap ass bill, but that $2 shit is $2 for a reason.

use plasticote it gives good coverage and its a acrylic enamel

or hire a spray gun and compressor for a weekend

Hey Grant i have a reason you should use cans.

Because if you dont i will stab you in the forehead with a knife.

Na mate on a serious note, i agree with your statement bout susp gear etc. seriously save the money for that stuff.

And also i sprayed mine on a shit cold fucken windy day with 2 buck cans (i did prime and prep sol it though lol) and it came up fuken schweet as aye!!!!

spend a bit of time and just use cans, its the only answer mate!!!!

Love u Grant....Markesan!

i hear that, your paint came up tops mark!

pretty much decided at this point to use the cans.

worst case senario, if the paint fades at least it will be a small layer of paint to cut back to respray the whole thing when im not a dodgy c**t http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/fap.gif
