View Full Version : 1jz + TE72 WAGON?

Has it been done before? I just bought 2 TE72 wagons with running 3TC's for $1,200 and drive them away. one is a 1980 with an auto trans, the other is a 1981 5 speed. BOTH are just hawt as hell!! So, i was considering doing a 1JZGTE in the 5 speed. the auto is in cherry condition with the factory AM radio still working flawlessly with flawless interior!! it was a hell of a steal and i would hate to desecrate such a beauty. I know that the entire AE86 suspension can be swapped over to the TE72 with little to no problems. but doing the 1J conversion would be a different story. What would it take to do it? I know the AE86 suspension cant handle the 1J.

Theres a T18 in Aus with one of those old holden V8s that gets drifted so I guess the suspension would be ok and you could put a hilux diff in it or something to handle the powa.
Actualy I have no opinion on this at all and am quite likely just talking out my arse.

EDIT: Actually now that I think about it, hasn't this or something similar been done in a few sprinters?

well.. that is very helpful insight so far! the problem is however, i live in the US, so i believe Holden motors would be a little out of the question for me bud.http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif... or would it? hmmmmm... if i did a Holden motor in any of the cars here, everyone would go absolute BONKERS!!!! does anyone have a good connection on one of these? I also hear that the police cars are Holdens over there. Is this true?

My reccomendation would be to whip the measuring tape and get some dimensions before you think about the feasibility.

1GGTE's have been put in AE86's before, but it's a tight fit lengthwise. if a 1JZ is the same length as a 1G, then you should be right to fit the thing in, but then there is the matter of getting a radiator fabricated to fit in the very, very small space you have left infront of the motor. A/C is probably out of the question.

You may (it's an outside chance seeing it's an inline engine, but still a possibility) have to convert it from a steering box to rack and pinion.

That said 1J's have been dropped into RA23's, so it could be feasible. but expect a fair bit of fabrication work.

Suspension wise, there is no reason AE86 / TE72 won't 'handle' the 1jz, but don't expect it to handle well. the 1J is a cast iron motor, and given the fact that it is a straight six, there will be alot of weight over the front wheels, which is almost directly proportionate to the massiv understeer. Very uprated springs would be an absolute minimum. maybe 8kg at the front. you could try and move as much weight as you could into the boot, i.e battery etc. A stronger diff will also definatley be required. you COULD run a T-series, but you'd probably kill it in a very very short time.

Question : what do you plan to use it for? if it's anything other than a straight line stomper, than i would not reccoment the 1J. maybe a 3SGTE or something to that effect? hit up google and find a decent motor with alloy construction, and love the fact that it will weigh alot less than a cast iron equivalent.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Javal.

I thought the old Holden V8s would be pretty much the same as Chevy V8s so maybe that would be another option. And yes the cop cars are mostly Holdens and Fords. Or at least the majority are.

Sorry to tell you this Mattysshop, but the VN commodore series 1 engine is EXACTLY a chev engine, but only in the big USA, they where mounted east-west not north-south, they where bought over from america, re-badges and put in the commodores, from then on, holden have slowly changed the design all the way up to the VZ. the engine to the VN's was a big costly for holden, but not as costly as the RB30's being bought from Japan and getting put into the VL's.

Sorry for getting off topic

yeh i know holden used chevy's in the cars over here.. most commonly the Gen 3.. but what i was saying is that holden used chevy's... that doesn't make them a holden V8.. the holden made V8's (not anything to do with Chev) are quite different in design..

chevs rock! holden http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif

i figured that if i brought my 86 over there, people would $hit themselves to see mine in person. who knows? it would also be pretty cool to be the only lhd 86 at one of the meets. as for it being real costly to do, i'm really not too worried about the money part. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif just read my sig doods. i do just fine. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
