View Full Version : Starter Motors?

I'm in the middle of a 4age conversion and require a starter motor as I didnt get one with the motor and i'd rather not use the 4ac one. The motor is an ae92 bigport 'redtop' with I think a 200mm flywheel? I know there is a better reduction geared starter on some 4ag's. Will this kind of starter work on my motor without modification? and if so exactly what engines did these starters come from?
Thanks.

you cant use your 4ac flywheel as it has 6 bolts holding it on and a 4age has 8, the gear reduction starter is off an ae92 twinky, I dont know if you need to swap the snout to make it fit

I know you can't use the flywheel I have a 4age flywheel. Thanks. I'll see if I can get one and hope it works.

The size of the flywheel has no impact on the starter motor. I've run 200 and 212 both using my standard 4AC starter. I hear that the 224 and 230 GZE flywheels also use the same ring gear, though can't personally confirm this.
I've never heard of anyone needing so swpa snouts, though this by no means is the last word on the issue.

I can confirm that you can use either the 200mm or 212mm or GZE flywheel with the T50 box and the 4A-C starter fits and works fine. (Although the GZE flywheel will hit the bellhousing a bit untill it wears its own groove!)
I don't see any real reason not to use the 4A-C starter. Only a reduction type starter may sound and look more newer and "JDM".

My question has been answered in this (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forum/index.php?showtopic=11118&hl=) thread. In short it will fit and work fine. As for sounding and looking newer, it is also lighter and most importantly cranks better.
