just curious as to the norm in regards to fuel economy.

JDM 16v, no oxy sensor and regular unleaded (normally will be using good fuel, just had a tank full so i used it)

don't know exactly how much fuel i used yet but guage is dead on empty and i got 412 klms

reasonable?

by getting some other peoples postings up i can guage whether the o2 sensor plays much part in fuel economy, and if so the difference it can make.

I do believe o2 sensor does affect economy as it has its part in high way lean out.

I think Gilly should be banned from the forums for asking such a ghey question. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rolleyes.gif Who cares about economy! All I want is more grunt.

Seriously though, I have never checked on my AE86, but on a full tank of fuel in the Peugeot 307 that I had, with a 55litre tank I would get about 550 kms with very gentle, never over the speed limit (no really) city driving.

I can't remember what capacity the AE86 tank is but I reckon 412kms of no doubt spirited driving http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif is pretty good.

I never had an O2 sensor on my 16 valve for years and when I connected it up there was no obvious difference in economy, in that I wasn't filling it any less frequently. I think if you were doing a lot of highway driving it may have some benefit.

Bear in mind, the UK AE86 GT's never had an O2 sensor fitted from the factory.

i just did the same thing for the first time seeing how much the car eats. i couldnt go to nearly empty cause my fuel gauge is less than reliabe. i got 380km from 28 litres. so around 7 to 8 litres per 100km's

Genuine tank capacity is 50 litres

I thought speinters had like 38 litre tanks or something.
I average about 10L to the 100kms with the old 4AFE, including a bit spirited driving. The economy engine without the performance and without the economy...

put in 37L today.

so 37L got me 412klms

8.98 L per 100klms.

pretty sweet.

using 98 octane fuel now too and i was surprised that it actually made a difference. not in the performance stakes, just idles much smoother and doesn't ping any more.

should ban myself it was a ghey question http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

hmm i honestly couldnt tell ya mine, ive neve had over half a tank and only put more in if the light comes on, (which i know i have plenty of time to fart around before i fill up before its empty), i always reset the odometer so its always on zero for some reason and i dont take not of it anyway, all i can tell ya is its got 130039kms on it lol. and it has a 48L tank, but apparently a (ive never done it myself ) you can t ever seem to get more than 40 from dry in becasue of restrictors and stuff.

If im sensible i get a fair way in it, its better than the 20L/100km the range rover gets on the freeway http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif on petrol and like 25L/100 on gas.

I fill mine when the pickup pump starts running dry on harder cornering and i've never managed to get more than about 37 litres in it! i always thought that the tank was meant to be a 40L capacity? I've only ever had the light come on once tho. It was just after i bought it and i didn't realise what the clicking noise was!! The lift pump was running dry just taking off from the lights or braking so it must have been getting pretty empty!

Gilly

yeah mine was pretty much dead empty (missing and stalling on the way to the servo http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif) wasn't far from my house so i was willing to see how many klms i got by almost running the tank dry.

like above still only took 37L

ni big deal close enough to the quoted 40L

Hmm sorry guys. I was quoting from a website I saw it on while trying to get a link for those part numbers. Will check it in the Toyota manual when I get home.

Does that mean I'm banned now?

I've put 48 litres in my tank - That was a good 150km+ with the low fuel light on. I used to get about 520km with the 4AC until the light came on, but I knew they had a 50 litre tank so I worked out that I could do over 700 km and not run out of fuel.
So I did - best I ever did with the 4AC was 715km on a tank.
The last 4AG I had in it, that had about 185hp, got 42mpg or not a lot less than the 4AC. (And about double the power!)

^^ whaa!! i get like 500k's out of a tank in the 4ac and thats when i drive like a grandma..

but then again i lose like 1/4 of a tank thru the mountains and thats only a good 40Km http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/huh.gif

Have had a look at a UK Toyota range 1985 brochure I have, and it says that the tank capacity is 50 litres. So I guess that means I am back in the club!

Not relevent to economy, but interesting to see how much fuel you can have in the tank and still get fuel surge problems. Makes you wonder about fuel guage accuracy too.

What is more interesting is it claims 8.9 litres per 100kms for what it calls urban cycle, and 6.2 at constant 56 mph (100km/hr) and 8.1 at constant 75mph (roughly 130km/hr) so I think that Gilly has been doing OK.

And as above, these cars never had an oxy sensor fitted from the factory.

I'm just curious but is it possible my car has modified / broken fuel tank as I've never had to put more than 30L in and the gauge doesn't go all the way up... and I get just under 400K's per tank... no 02 sensor.??

I reckon you will find the sender arm is hitting on one of the baffles (that's a laugh, bloody useless things) and limiting its range of movement. happened inexplicably to me too though mine wouldn't go down. Hadn't been touched but just got stuck. Fine ever since too. Pull the sender out and have a look.

hahaa stupid fuel gauges, my gauge is rooted. when i fill the ca full with fuel the gauge shows empty like off the chart empty. them as i use fuel it moves up to halfway then when it reaches about halfway t then starts headin back down towards empty again.

when i put fuel in it, it usually takes about 30 litres so theres plent in it i guess.

mine does exactly the same thing.

it's great for getting people to chip in for fuel eh

welcome back http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

possibility UK like JDM have different tanks as opposed to our ADM ones? i know being EFi only the tank top should be different, but maybe the actual tank itself is different as well?

Fuel tank capacity from Toyota manuals:
AE86/AE85 50 liters
AE71 wagon 47 liters
AE82 50 liters
KE30/KE35 50 liters
KE36 wagon 47 liters
KE50/TE51 50 liters
TA22 50 liters

whatever they say about sprinters its wrong. I know for sure no more than 40L will fit into a sprinter tank, same with my AE71 wagon.

My fuel tank must be smaller than that list implies. I've only ever had to put in around 30L and get up to 370 odd KM a tank (when driving to work every day and no "cruising").

So how did I put 48 litres into mine?

Granto
4th January 2007, 08:17 AM
well, that'd be 40+8.

you must've had a good two litres in there already! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

I'm guessing that's either carby or you run a surge tank?

my smallport motor with bigport jdm ecu gets like 10-12l/100km http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif
tho the gze twinky can do 8-14l/100km

Yah, I've put in 42 litres of fuel in mine before. I didnt trust my fuel guage, so I just ran till my car started surging.

I think I got approx 480km out of that tank. On average I refill when I get to 450km.

I have an idea, I will fill up a jerry can, drive till it stalls on me, then put the jerry fuel in there and then go imediatly to a petrol station. That way I will know for sure what my sprinter takes. Although I have some extra baffles I dont have any fuel pumps or anything in there. I have had it so low that it has surged around even the gentlest corner (thats with the baffles!) and even then I only got 38.5L in it.

You can get it so low it'll surge in a straight line.

bit of a bump,

just thought it interesting, using fancy Caltex fuel (98 octane) got an extra 30klms to the tank, no change in my driving at all, still visit the limiter a few times a day http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif car run better (able to run timing maxed out full) and just felt nicer overall.

just thought it was cool

Yes, I have found the Caltex Premium stuff to be best for mileage. I drive about 380km a week and on Caltex Premium I only spend about $35. If I get Shell Optimax it goes down a lot faster!

LordNafe
12th January 2007, 02:08 PM
Mmmm I've had good results with Caltex and BP!! I was lucky enough fora while to get some caltex $50 vouchers through work http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif ANd quite liked it. Usually go to BP though.
I've found that Shell usually gives less K's and less power. In something like an N/A 4age you don't noticea drop in power as much, but I certainly do in the Sil80.

My fuel guage isn't working right now so I've been driving it until it cuts out around RH corners.
It started doing that yesterday, and I managed to get 42 litres into it.
