The shift on my recently purchased (car was a surprise gift) 86 felt a bit.. 'dry'.

So I went underneath to check the transmission oil and holy shit there was none.

Then I noticed this...

[attachment=10969:attachment]

Sorry for the size, I forgot to bump the res up.

To me.. someone who has basic mechanical skills.. Looks like where the oil went.

Three bolts are missing across the bottom the part of of the engine block that should mate with the gearbox is bent.

So... this should be pretty obvious to guys with experience.. is this where all the oil went?

Thats the bellhousing, no oil in there... check the fill plug on the side of the box for oil level (oil should be up to were the plug is)

regardless though... with a space that big something is not right http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

Well thank god for that. According to the previous owner, new gbox oil was put in 200km ago.

Well I checked the oil level like you said and I could find none, even if I wiggled my little finger in as low as I could get it.

The three missing bolts and the results gap would mean that the gbox is not very securely mounted to the engine. Yes?

Yeah stick some new bolts in the badboy and from what I've heard you stick the gearbox oil in until its up to the filler hole so top that up as well.

RobertoX

yeah thats correct, fill it till it reaches the bottom of the filler hole.... any oil on the outside of the box? that is a good indication of leaks.

put bolts back in as well but from that pic it looks fairly out of line, might be fine though

No oil on the outside of the box. Seems to be unusually clean actually.

Is there a way I can find out the exact specs of the bolts that I'll need?

take one of the other ones off the other side and take it in to a hardware/bolt shop?

maybe 200klms ago the oil was taken out and someone forgot to put some back in http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

as above any oil outside the box will be the indication as to where it was leaking from.

i got $10 that says they forgot to put oil in going from your description.

i've done it!!......

put a beter pic up if you can, i'm not feeling smart today and i can't for the life of me figure out what i'm looking at http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

I'm worried about putting too much stress on the remaining bolts. I guess I could prop the gbox up to make sure it doesn't shift.

I'll get another photo up but you're looking at the underside of the gbox where it joins the bellhousing.

I might massage the bellhousing with a hammer to get it a bit closer then bolt it up.

you should be able to lign it up perfect, without the need of bolts to pull it in, and just dont over stress the bolts and if u use bolts to pull it in, keep going around the box and do up the bolts evenly...

give that ago and put up a few more pics..

Just stick the jack under to prop it up, take a bolt out & take it to your local car shop/lawnmower shop/whatever and get some relacements and put them in. Very easy.

yea if ure worried just put a jack to support it..but i dont think its necessary though i havent done that before...just take 1 off the opposite side and not the 1 right next to it..anyway the box xmember is still there to hold it

to fill gearbox with oil... Remove shifter, pour 2litres in (i think they hold 1.6l to be exact yeah?), reassemble http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
Easy. The leftover will drain itself out.

RobertoX
15th January 2007, 01:41 PM
you forgot take out fill plug (otherwise excess wont drain out)

There's no oil in said box http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

RobertoX
15th January 2007, 02:15 PM
yeah according to the manual it holds 1.7 litres of oil... if you put in 2l it will be too much so you need the filler plug removed to get the level right http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

also we dont know that there is no oil

300ml of extra oil won't do it any harm anyway.. maybe they just didn't fill it up as much.. from my personal experience playing with boxes just doesn't work very well when there isn't much lube..

I drained the box, even went so far as to jack up the front then the back to get as much out as I could.
Got maybe 100 - 200ml of fluid!

Filled it with Castrol dexron 3 auto fluid.
Got new bolts from Toyota and they pulled the bellhousing into place. There's a bit of a gap between the bolts (1 - 2mm) but I guess that won't matter.

Huge difference in the shift now but the gbox is still fked. Double de-clutching from 4->3 gets annoying.

No matter, give it 12 months before pretty much everything is replaced. mmm renesis power.
It's not my daily.

if you're fussy about the gap then try pull out all the bolts and do it up again..go criss cross (spelling) and tighten each of them little by little again going criss cross..if the gaps still there then probly somethings fucked but it runs so who cares http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

The Technical Questions section has sort of taken a dive lately. SHould be moved to Off topic and jokes.

This thread with oil missing out the crack in gearbox, plus the other guy with brake pads too thick...

Hey everyone who got that genuine AE86 workshop manul off ebay, READ IT!
