Well just bought a 20v sprinter fitted with a t18 rear diff ( with sway bar) and im not up to scratch on the toyota seen im a datsun man previously.
i searched " t18" " t 18" " strength " and found nothing conclusive.
just wondering how strong the t18 diff is? main weak area's? axles? gears?
im planning on keeping the 20v for a while but also contemplating sr/ca swap in the coming year and want to no if it can take 180-220rwkw from the nissan donk??
obviously it will be thrashed, i drive my cars hard. And will make a few drift appearances at oran park in 20v form.
the t18 i got is locked ( not sure of ratio to) i was wondering if i can get any lsd's from anywhere that bolt in? and how strong they are and price of them also different ratio's available?
also how strong is the t50? can it take the 20v thrashing for long? any bolt in stronger replacement? i heard JDM boxes are a goer? clutch slave is on passenger side on mine to cant remember which side was adm and jdm..
any help will be appreciated.. pics to follow on the weekend.

a $70 custom braided cable will make the gearbox differences irrelevant
its always hard to say how strong something is because of different driving styles

T18 ratio from factory is 3.7 (way to high for a 4a atmo motor)
and as a t -series diff this is a zenki model, earlier type, very important when ordering lsd as later (Kouki) models are different, same goes for wheel bearings.
Brand new "TRD 2 way" can be had for $1000. But aussie $ v's the yen is really good right now at 94 yen, you could get it for under $970 to your door. Yes i know very cheap.
Gearbox and diff should hold with stockish 20v power, but at 180-220rwkw it will struggle with the abuse.
But as mentioned driving style will detirmine longevity.
Weakness of t18 would have the be the axles diameter and t50 is the small gearset, they werent really designed (nothing really ever is from the factory) to handle heaps of power and abuse.
But people have had success.

1k for a 2 way? hook a brother up haha
u no which t50 i have? adm or jdm? clutch slave on passenger side.. i searched on here but couldnt find where it was posted..
so the t18 isnt to bad a choice for the 20v then? wats a JDM diff worth drum to drum ( or disc to disc? )

i say go for a supra gear box w58 i think it is. and youll never have to worry about a broken gear box agian. only reason i say that is that t50s are getting old and mayb if you got a nw t50 it might handle the 20v, so in saying that to rebuild a t50 i would imagine it costing the same amount to do a w58 conversion.

I think this has been covered before. It is also dependant on everyone's opinion.
In my opinion, a T series and T50 will both be fine for any NA and even most turbo/SC 4As. Abuse will shorten their life, but they are remarkably strong.
A W58 conversion costs a minimum of $1500 (that is DIY). A rebuild on a T50 should be $500-1000 absolute max.

You've got an adm gearbox, because the clutch slave is on the passenger side.

when u do eventually change to ca/sr conversion. remember to used an r32 gear box and not a ca/sr box as ca/sr box will need to have a new hole cut to poke the gear stick thru and sit 100mm behind the original t50 hole. r32 skyline boxs go in with minimal modifcation.

Sad to see another Sprinter going to get the Nissan treatment in the future. It is a bit like putting a Chevy in a 911. It might go better but it has no soul. Wouldn't it be easier to buy a Silvia as opposed to butchering another AE86.

hahaha ive actually got an rb20det box sitting in my garage from my 1600...
toyota body, nissan donk.. sorry bang for buck u cant beat them... i like the look and feel of the ae86 and i also like the quality and torque/power of the nissan motors.. 200rwkw from an internally stock sr20 isnt hard to get... try doin that with a 4a http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rolleyes.gif hahaha
but like i said im sticking with the 20v for a while.. cheap to run and i wont want to much power yet im only starting out drifting here... gotta start at the bottom and work my way up.
thanx for the help guys.. ill buy a spare diff and box over the coming month ( if i can find them) and hunt for an lsd.. car goes to engineers on monday and see what they say about the locker ay..

Nicebbo, I hinted at this before, but I will spell it out now. All the questions you are asking have been covererd before. Search here, Google, toymods, club4ag etc and be prepared to sit back and do a few hours of reading.
That should answer not only your two last questions but many others that will surely pop up.
EDIT - or you can just thank Roberto and refrain from any research yourself.

like i said b4, i searched those key words and looked at every topic on every page that came up and found nothing conclusive ( unless i missed it). i made the effort.
RobertoX: i cant understand what u said, is my t18 a zenki or zouki? or were u saying the JDM is no stronger than the ADM box?
SoLo: thanx man appreciate it.

sorry answer was a bit brief... no the JDM is no stronger than ADM (some people will go on about bigger synchros in low gears or something but its probably marginal)
your t18 diff is zenki ie early model with smaller axles
Hen is right though, these are among the most covered two questions on sprinter related forums. Maybe you need a bit of practice searching...
i searched " t18" " t 18" " strength " and found nothing conclusive.[/b]
these might not give you what you need but you could add "diff" and "zenki" and "kouki" and "LSD" and any other words you might come across in your initial search.
