Does anyone know if you can put in a R31 diff without cutting it down? how much more track does it have over standard?
I have a hilux diff that i was planning on using, but after changing it to 4 stud and doing a R31 brake conversion surly it would be better to just cut corners and get a R31 straight in, i know you can get good LSD's for these, and i know they are tough as nails, but will they add too much track width. Or maybe because the housing is off center?
I plan on having a fully enginered street legal SR powered drifter. So what does the law say about increased track. If it isnt too much, it will save me getting wheel spacers and deep dish rims, and im not scared of pumping the hell outa my guards anyway.
(I think the world just ran out of T series diff by the way)
Cheers
PS. What about bluebird diffs????????

Although i'm not sure about how wide an r31 diff is, i do know in NSW, engineering states that technically, track cannot be increased more than 25mm. The r31 diffs are also 28 spline borg warners so not quite as strong as a hilux (but probably strong enough for your application). I have also heard alot of people complain about the strength/durability of borg warner LSDs but probably best researching it yourself as well.
If i were you, i'd just stick with modifying the Hilux you have if you've got one the right width. Heaps of ratios and LSD availability.

is there a diff available thats can fit an lsd thats between a T series and F series in terms of stength and weight?

Sam: There is an E-series diff which is commonly available through Toyota commercial vehicles but there is no known LSD available for these. The only other option you'd have would be to source a late model jdm ae86 diff with the larger axles.

Just cut down the r31 diff. its not that hard or expensive... borgy will hold 300rwhp day in day out no probs my mates never had a problem with his.. altho its spooled. lsd's can be had for $600 tops too

To find out the track change, go to a wrecker and measure an R31, then compare it to your stock diff. Also check how far off centre the tailshaft flange is. This may be a problem.
I haven't heard much good about borgwarner LSDs, but I know you can get a good KAAZ centre for R31s. Just pricey though.
And the Bluebird diff might be a good option, but LSDs for these are insanely rare and expensive.
If you want to have the car fully engineered, talk to an engineer now and find out what he has to say about track changes then work from there.

Cut R31 + KAAZ LSD, Hilux + LSD, Tseries + LSD or welded E series. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Yep,
Check www.aeu86.com (i think that's the one). A few of the drifting blokes have used them. Cheap as chips diff too!

are there any aftermarket centres available?

Im super keen to hear more about this volvo set up. Is there cutting down involved? LSD option? are they disk or drum/ need of upgrade? heavy as?
Who knows about these?

Volvo Diff. 7" centre 27 splined axles. Fairly heavy for it's size (theres alot of metal in it for some reason) Comes with a strange stud pattern of 5x108. Being a Dana diff, there are aftermarket LSDs available but there are hardly any standard LSDs available.
Note there are 2 different hemispheres available, one suiting ratios 3.7 down and 3.7 up. So eg. you cant put a 4.3 into a 3.5 casing. They're 1400 wide so a good width for sprinters (its only 5mm a side you lose) They do come with disk brakes standard as well. Will probably need new handbrake cables for it though.
In my opinion, if you were to go to the trouble of converting a diff, i'd choose a larger/stronger centre... ie an F-series at the minimum or a G-series. The weight of the volvo diff is very close to an F-series.

While this topic is up I've got a question :)
How much roughly should I expect to pay for these cut and shut without an aftermarket lsd installed ready to drop into a KE70?
Hilux ?
R31?
Also probably a stupid question but are R31's the same stud pattern as the rollas? And do they come standard with an lsd or open centre?

my hilux diff (not shortened) cost $600 to get mounts changed.
r31 has 4x114.3
the silouette's came with a very gay lsd
get a hilux but don't waste your money on the factory lsd's ok?
mine also had S-II rx7 calipers with corona disc's.

What would you suggest as a good replacement for the standard hilux lsd?
I dont want a locker or a spool..

Ahh ok without running down to the car to check, are ke70's 4x114.3? Kaaz LSD's for R31's are around the $1200 mark right??

Thanks mate ;) Is their any better variety from the R31's that I should be after? Or are they all pretty much the same?

either the true-trac (1-way) or (if it fits seeming as they are both g-series) a tomei/kaaz jzx81 lsd.

Hmmm i might stick with the hilux lsd for now, and shim it up if it sucks
Then look at going for something full sik

mine was shimmed up......and it sucked, cost me $600 in rebuilds as well

Whats the go with changing stud patterns? The friend I have helping me do the conversion said to go with a Falcon XR6 diff, but how hard is it to get the pattern changed back? Or is it not really the best way to go at all?

get your stock ke70/ae86 brake drum and the hub you want redrilled, take it to an engineer/fitter & turner and voila its done :2thumbs:

I will most probably use a MKll corona or YR22 trago diff.
They are both 1455mm mounting face to mounting face wide, are of the Fseries (7.5 crown wheel) lighter then a G series but not quite as strong, have disc's standard (i know some targo's did) LSDs are easy too find (kaaz cusco etc).
Only thing that will need to be dont is sway mounts over and change back to four stud. I want to keep the length as i was going to run spacers anyway. So i gain a tottal track of about 22.5mm either side.

MK2 Corona diffs are actually 1410 wide and hence the perfect width for a sprinter. They're also rare as rocking horse shit now. The Tarago diffs are 1445-50 wide. Both already come in 4 stud and AFAIK, no tarago comes with a disk brake rear. You might be confusing the tarago for the Crown diff which comes standard with disk brakes but are 5 stud.

I have a R31 diff, professionally cut down, All new parts, custom billet axels, built for a 13bT AE86, good for 600hp.
I havent installed it yet

Oh thanks fro that Eddie. I want to run spacers so the tarago diff will suit me better anyway. I think we have a MK2 Corona diff sitting up the back at work could be wrong though.
Discs dont bother me as i would go to a twin piston caliper and a vented rotor
EDIT: Im also lead to believe the Kaaz LSD part # DAT2090 will fit the F series diff. Its from a IS200
