View Full Version : Rear end clunking

Hi,
I am having some clunking issues with my treuno coupe. It's a bit strange and doesn't happen all the time. I've replaced all the rear bushes which sorted some of the noises. I've drained and replaced the oil, which stopped the whine (no real crap in the oil either)

When i brake using the gears (mainly down to 2nd gear) i get a clunking. Not just one clunk it, is constant until it slows right down. I've checked all the prop bolts and they seem fine. Anyone know how to check the play in the diff?

Or recommend a good garage in Perth who can fix this once and for all.

Thanks,
Ian

I had what sounded like a similar noise. Turned out my axle bolts had come a bit loose, still has noises but i think they are of the new trailing arms i have in.

Check those bolts, trailing arms, maybe even check the bolts holding you diff centre in are all tight if its that concerning.

lsd ? & what brand/grade of oil did u use ?

I filled it up with ten tenths (can't remember the grade but it's the one a few folks recommended on here)

It has a factory LSD which seems to be working fine.

MIne was clunking on lift off, jack the car up and see how much freeplay you have on the axles. Just grab the axle and see how far u can twist it back and forth independant of the other axle, if you know what I mean.

A little movement is find but if you can do liek half a turn its probably missing some teeth or something internally.

check that your tailshaft is tight and that there is no freeplay in the uni joints on the tailshaft

Thats what I suspect is doing it on mine...

check you hand brake cable is on its proper course, it if rubs up against a trailing arm or something it can make those noises and make your brakes lumpy.

Also if you exhaust goes over your diff have a look at that, ive had some issues with mine,

let me just say i got the midas touch, now my rolla is filing for sexual assault.

Thanks for the hints guys. Never had a chance to check it out yesterday. Will be under her today for another look (I bought mine flowers and chocolates before interfering with her http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif ). Might put it up on axle stands and get someone to 'drive' it while i take a look under.

check your uni's in your tail shaft.. and also the backlash in your diff.. (in neutral hand brake NOT on, chock the wheels with somthing but make sure the car can roll a few inches..) crawl under the car and see how much you can rotate the tail shaft.. back and forth.. the less it has the better.. my g/f old escort nearly did a 1/4 turn.. needless to say 1 flat change and the pinion lost a few teeth.. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

how is the backlash adjusted on the tail shaft...? as I may have to do this to mine me thinks....

it's not adjusted on the tail shaft.. it's adjusted in the diff via lapping..

I had a feeling it wasnt so simple... cheers Matt..

Right...eventually got under the car (work kept getting in the way)

I can turn the tailshaft approx 15mm before i meet any resistance. Then it make a bit of a clunk. How much play is too much play?

The u/j's seem to have no play in them.

When i drive it if i lift off the throttle from reasonably high revs i get the clunking

(i renewed the exhaust rubbers just to be sure it wasn't that, and there was no sign of knocking)

when the car is in gear, if i turn the wheels by hand it's approx 1/8 of a turn before i meet resistance.

Is this diff or tailshaft or both?

15mm isn't crazy town... but it is on the worn out side.. your diff doesn't need a rebuild.. just need to adjust the back lash.. how comfortable are you with poping out your diff center? cos you can adjust it yourself on the ground if you pop the center out...

Popping out the diff centre....replaced one in my old mk2 escort, so not too daunting.

Any links to how to adjust the back lash?

even if you just pop it out and take it down to a diff shop and ask them to take some backlash out for ya.. won't take long to do.. like 1 min of thier time.. they can do it on the bench infront of ya!

basicly you adjust those 2 big plates with all the holes in them on the side where the axles go in.. but you have to undo the 12mm bolt at the top to take off the locking tab..

diff stuff (http://www.miata.net/garage/diff_rr.html)

scroll down and you can see what i mean..

u need a dial gauge to do it properly.. but you can see buy hand wheather or not your doing the right thing.. and tightening it bit by bit till it's moving a bit less would be fine in my books.. just make sure you leave a bit of back lash in there..

and run a slightly thicker diff oil to help your bearings if they are old..

also check all your trailing arm bolts.. and when your tail shaft is hanging slowley turn it in your hands, (the yoke) to check for tight spots and or freeplay..

checked the backlash on mine today and it all seems good (moves maybe 3-4mm).... so thats not the cause of the clunking in mine... need a jack to really get under it and have a look at the rest of the drivetrain..

Thought i'd add an update to this for future folks searching

The diff bearings were shot and as a result so was the LSD. Luckily it hadn't f*cked the CW&P

The garage has loaned me a standard diff centre and i'm on the lookout for an LSD one.

Moral of the story. Fix it the second it starts to make noise or it could be costly!

the only clunk i get is going up driveways, sounds like its front and rear

Isn't it normal for LSD's to clunk. How much because mine clunks quite a lot and quite loud. But it hasn't being in that long.

Do peoples lockers whine at high speed?? just put mine in this arvo and it whines slightly up around 70-80kms, i was wondering what it could be.
