Hey all,

whats the worst that could happen if #3 & #4 wires are crossed and you turn it over and it goes 'pop'?

hypothetically of course http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif

Thanks, Pat.

Well thats what i thought, however this was the first time starting the engine since i bought it and after hooking the plugs up right and giving it another go it seems to run ok but blows alot of smoke. I switched it off after 20 secs when i saw all the smoke, could it be because it's been sitting for a while? Or is engine damage more likely? i'm afraid to run it to see if it clears up http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif .
When it went "pop" it was as if the engine had spun backwards as smoke came out the intake! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/5/4/536981.jpg

it wouldn't have caused any damage. if the engine has been sitting for a while it could have worn valve stem seals causing oil to leak into the cylinder which would in turn cause the smoke on start up, it should go away though.

just run it for a while, if the smoke doesn't go away after a few minutes then you can be worried.

the whole farting out the intake is a normal occurance if you muck the timing up/firing order. sometimes you can get flames too which is pretty cool, if the said engine isn't yours and is infact a TAFE item and you are trying to beat your classmates as to who can get the dizzy timing so wrong it shoots flame out the carb but still runs.......

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif Cheers Gilly, I'll give it another go this arvo.

Fingers crossed,

Pat.

Had the same thing when we changed the head on mine. Changed the leads to the right way,and then it started smoking-took it for a 5 min drive, and smoke stopped. Still smoking once every now and again though, which leads me to believe-valve stem seals,as mentioned above.

Well i let it run for a while and got it up to temperature but the smoking persists, it appears to be black and theres soot like stuff spitting out of the exhaust which leads me to beleive it's running really rich(?). I spoke to a mechanic who confirmed that the plugs wouldn't cause damage and he added they sometimes pour oil over import engines cylinders to keep them from corroding. He also reccommended running it for a bit to clear out any oil. The smoke should be blue if it's oil right? Any ideas as to what could be connected wrong or not at all to cause it to run really rich? I sprayed some carbi cleaner in the intake which helped to settle the idle but i'm out of ideas as to the cause of the smoke. It's a stock JDM 4age. It sounds ok at idle if a touch rough and spins freely so it can't be too major (i hope).

OK, did some searching, i'm going to check the fuel return line for blockages.

mine is alttle rich at idle too, sometimes to the point where it stalls.

comes out next weekend so i can't be assed trying to find the fault now, i'll suss it when i put it in the KE

i also has this problem when i first started my 4age it could b a number of things as i have learnd the 4ag's are very thouchy my best bet check map sensor, right size exhaust and for any cracks in the intake manifold as these were my problems also the fuel pressure regulator is a good one to have a look at make sure it's not blocked and working as it should. check all the simple things first b4 u go to nuts as i thought mine was running rich too

OK smoke sorted, it was a vacuum leak http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rolleyes.gif (sigh of relief). Now to figure out why it's idling at 1500rpm....It's making a loud hissing noise at idle too, is this normal? i don't remember the old engine doing it. Also, theres three vacuum outlets on the inlet manifold, one going to the fuel reg, one to the map sensor, what is to be done with the third?

you still have a vacuum leak, a big one too if you can hear the hissing. check all your vacuum lines, might be a big one, like the booster one.

i'm just assuming you have done the conversion, so easy to leave one off http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

the third vacuum hose goes to your charcoal canister, located down on the drivers side chassis rail

OK, the hissing appears to be coming from the ~10mm hole just in front of the throttle (inside at the bottom), i'm assuming this is just the air supply at idle and it would be more quiet with a filter on and at the correct idle speed, however i didn't think it would be that noisy.
At the moment i have the charcoal canister connected to one of the two vac outlets on the top of the throttle body, the one in the middle facing forward is blocked and the one on the engine side facing the engine is to the canister, this is incorrect? I got the setup off a picture i found searching.
Also the timing seems to be too advanced; the dizzy is turned as far as it will go anticlockwise, however turning it back a bit doesn't seem to affect the idle speed.

This will sound a little stupid. But right where your throttle body is, there is a little screw type thing, if you screw it up or down it changes the idle.

Now, tell me what's wrong with doing that http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/5/4/536981.jpg ?

tried that, it was nearly all the way down anyway, still searching for a solution.... Would a faulty connector for the water temp sensor(green plug at the back of the head) cause the high idle?
