I am building a fairly resonable N/A 4AGE using aftermaket rods and Arias forged pistons ect and don't want to skimp on the bearing side of things. Can anyone recommend the ACL Race bearing or is there anything else that would be better.
Cheers

acl bearings have a good rep here and overseas. They are trusted by multiple engine builders. I think its a safe bet

yep.. in project revs..
cost about $136 for a set of mains and bigends.. cheap insurance really considering the stock bearings (acl replacements) were about $118 set..
thats my nice fat trade price though.. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif
my mate runs them in his 3SGTE also.. 300fwhp with ease http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

we use lots of these and have them in stock all the time. www.roadandtrack.net.au.
be aware, they do not come in graded sizes like Toyota. only Std, and "normal" oversizes like 0.25mm. what this means is that if you have a standard sized crank that takes (say) grade 4 shell, then the ACL race bearing (or any other "standard" bearing), will be ever so slightly too small. This only becomes a problem if you are trying to slip Standard replacment bearings, ACL, King, Whatever, onto a Standard sized crank, that originally was on the bottom end of its size tolerances and you will lose oil pressure
On a reground crank, this is not a problem, as each crank journal can be ground very precisely and 1 size bearing used througout
The same problem applies to the both main and big ends, so DO NOT just toss them into an old engine and think you have done a good job.
The ACL race Main beaings are called 3/4 grooved. This is to help solve the chronic oiling problems both 4AG and 3S engines have. its designed to stop the oil suply to the rods getting getting sheared off at certain positions in the rotation.
The factory used fully grooved bearings to do the same thing, but these have fractionally lower load capabilites.
In summary, great in a profesisonaly rebuilt engine. Potential disaster in a back yard fix-up

Thanks for the reply. I was going to grind the crank anyway but that info you gave is well worth knowing for the future. I was not aware of the graded bearing situation for standard cranks. You sell them which is great. I might have to come down and see you about all my machine work very soon.
Thanks
Todd
