If you have a shed im sure you can buy parts yourself to do it if you want to invest in engine jack.

hey man, welcome to the forums
you need to READDDD ALLLOTTTT!!!!
tools that you need to work on a AE86
a DECENT socket set, no less than $100
you can get away with a crappy spanner set, but decent socket set is a must.
but make sure you get multiples of 10,12,14,17,19mm spanners, as you WILL loose them http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif
various screwdrivers is a must as well
a large hammer, both rubber and metal (A MUST!!!)
just go and buy a bunch of random tools from super cheap (pliers, multigrips etc), they will get you by, and when you figure out what your doin, you'll realise what tools you use the most, and then you can slowly buy decent ones.
if you are serious about learning about working on your car
forget about the engine conversion for the time being, start with something small.
buy youreslf a manual for your car, and go and change your brake pads or something.
whilst reading ANYTHING about cars that you can find. it is all relevent.
everone has the ability to work on their own car (well within reason), just need to put in the effort. and it is very rewarding when you do stuff yourself!!!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif
pluss we are all here to help you out, but lots of your own effort is a must.
this is just my advice as to how i would suggest on how to get into it all.
if you wanna talk on msn or something, shoot us a pm, more than happy to help http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

i live in an apartment..im doing the conversion in my carpark now..
and tools i have a socket set, spanner set, cordless drill, hammer, mallet, pliers, most of them arent decent..i flared a few sockets and broke a ring spanner so far..but u can get replacements for like $3-4 for a fairly decent socket
take the time and read up on stuff, then get ur hands dirty lol..u can download a body manual and engine manual for the car..search on here some1 has posted the links to it before..
where u in melbourne?

go and buy some tools... there not that expensive.. you don't need any special tools for a 4age conversion.. just a set of spanners and a socket set with a few extensions.. screwdrivers and some pliers or sidecutters..
it is literally undo 4ac engine mounts.. put onto 4age block.. put 4age into where 4ac came out of... they are common as anything now days.. if your in need of what clutch to use etc etc.. people here will help you for stuff like that.. and Gilly has a guide on how to.. that is quite detailed.. i have written a 4AGE - 4AGZE guide.. so if you wanted a GZE conversion.. then it's pretty much fill in with a mixture of the guides.. just check the tech article section..

how long have you been driving your sprinter? if i was you i wouldnt touch the engine for now until you have the knowledge to do it yourself, you could start with suspension mods as you will notice these changes the most and learn alot
KEcalvin

it is indeed a fairly easy swap, but i think people are glossing over things such as exhaust system and ecu wiring. you will need an entire new exhaust system from the 4ac, and depending on what kind of loom you get with the engine, it may require wiring. not so easy tasks for someone completely unfamiliar with working on cars, but if you have the time, patience and willingness to learn, by all means go for it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
