Ok so I have been having this problem with my engine for approximately a week now, I'll do my best to explain it for you guys and I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with an answer/solution.
I'm running a 4age 16V bigport w. stock ecu.
After I have driven the car around enough to get the engine warm; when it drops to idle it will sit around 1500 then will go up to 2000 then drops back to 1500 and continues to cycle like this. It kind of sounds like the cars panting. It doesn't bother the car much as far as I can tell, but it bugs the hell out of me.
I have had a mechanic look at it with no luck.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? How can I fix it?
Thanks

check for vacuum leaks
then plate off your idle up bypass and adjust the fixed bypass.
search haround, this is a very common problem on 4AGEs

Its called hunting not panting.
Clean yoru throttle body and lower your idle. Set timing to 10deg btdc with the terminal shortened.
Id start there, then maybe close of idle bypass and check for vacumm leaks.

It the hunk of metal under your throttle body. Has all the water lines going to it.

Glenn (ae86fow) has this problem with his 4AGE setup in his. He reckons its either the TPS (throttle position sensor) or a vacuum/intake issue. He hasn't had a lot of time to do much about it but.
Funny as hell driving through Briasbane at night but, when he 'idles' at the lights he gets a lot of attention from idiots in Commodores and BMWs (sadly enough) because of the noise http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif Not a winner for daily driving but, I can imagine.

piss the gasket off and just use some goo, make sure all the holes that are ment to be blocked up are blocked up, things are in different spots between FWD and RWD

yeah either block it off or check for air in the cooling system. Burp the system properly with heater on.
Use a cut coke bottle in radiator. seal it with tape and fill the bottle so its the highest point of the cooling system.
Then run the engine with topping up water and let air come out.

there are several possible causes.
A major intake air leak, like from a damaged inlet or TVIS gasket will cause high and erratic idle.
The idle setting on the throttle also may be wrongly set. There is a very specific procedure to follow. read the manual and follow the instructions
The idle control valve under the throttle body is also common fault. they can often be repaired. the device is there to allow idle air bleed to change with temperature, and its better if it works. blanking it off is a solution, but not the best one
