View Full Version : Thinking of making an ae86 comp car

im getting an ae86 soon in good condition, stock australian model with 4ac carby, faded paint etc. Getting it for about $1200 running with nothing wrong with gearbox and motor. Im only 17 and dad is getting me into racing with this car, we are thinking of 4AGE smallport, T50 box, stripping all interior, putting in racing seat for driver, put massive camber on the front wheels and lower it (maybe coilovers), brake upgade, LSD, rollcage and 5 point race harness.

THE CAR WILL NOT GET REGISTERED OR COMPLIANCED. Also as an alternative i would be intrested in someone's ex race or track car with simular modifications that cannot be registered, Any suggestions in where to look for ex race cars or track cars?

Im from northern new south wales and looking at going to streeter by streeter on the goldcoast for most of the parts. Any information would be greatly appreciated. More intrested in buying a track car around $7000 as it would be easier.

Cheers. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

there was a race ae86 for sale for 20k a few days ago on forsale section.
Might i suggest as well that you drive it with some mild mods before you go all out on a full race.

Dont have that much money, I am only going to be using it as a track car, So i am not looking for anything that is not registered or complianced as it will be getting towed to the tracks and never driven on roads. Thanks man but a 4age isnt a big step up and its not getting turbo'd or anything. Cheers. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

to get your car ready to race you will need at least 7k otherwise you will be breaking things all day long, also a 16v smallport wont be that competitive against 20v and 3s motors

16v owns drift, 20v owns grip.

a 16v hybrid is a 1.6

7age isnt a 1.6 http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

thanks guys for the comments. yeah well i'll most likely put a 16v in it cause they are cheaper, not to worried about been competitive as the project wont be ready until next season and it will be my first year on a track and will have alot to learn dont mind coming last each race, might even use it to learn to drift.
What do you think i will be breaking? there isnt much power running through it, im not the best driver but im not to rough on the cars, 4age parts are relatively cheap. Gearbox's arent too bad and the motor's can hadle alot of abuse.

that car is not registered i believe, and if you want a good track ae86 expect to spend that much, sounds like someone hasn't done their research.

Be careful of importing a race car, if you want to run it in certain CAMS events you will need an aproved cage among other things. You should look into what you want to put it in, if its just motokhanas, hillclimbs and the occasional drift thing then you should be alright but if you want to get anything more read the rules.

Im from ocean shores, north of byron bay, my name's adam by the way. Dont suppose your mate's with troy smith who used to live out near casino, i think he is about 21. Ive got 3 mechanics already that want to work on it as soon as i get it. But so far it looks like ill be doing the car from scratch: been offered a non complianced ae86 coupe, not complianced, rust in the rear wheel arch, 16v, rims, extractors, strut brace and bolt in roll cage for $7800 but its in victoria and would cost quite a bit to get here.

If you are looking for a shell, wolfwood (ben has one still). PM him about it. Its stripped, seam welded, cage etc etc, resprayed and no rust.

i'll get flamed out of this thread but why go with an 86 when for so much less $ you could use a 70/71 base? if its not going to be streeted then you dont need the "cred" that an 86 gives.

just wondering is all. goodluck with it mate. sounds like it will be a good build.

ke70's are really ugly lol. Going to be using it as a track/drift car and just like the look of ae86's and have plenty of parts for 4age's sitting in the garage. Thanks tipper86 ill look into it.

a 70 base would be the best best, since parts are like 1/10 the cost of 86 parts http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/5/4/536981.jpg

even cheaper would be a ae82 twincam

You talking about panels etc? On my crew that working on the car i have a spray painter/fibreglasser, pannelbeater, 2 mechanics and have a auto-elec that said he will do alot for free. You are right with the cheaper parts but im not to worried.

That wasn't a nice comment about the 70/71's being ugly dude......regardless of whether its true or not....... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Anyway i race a 4ac engined ae71, its got AJPS suspension set up under it, locker, zorst, cut up air filter, race seats and a set of 13x6 mags. It's never let me down reliability wise and even managed to surprise a few people at the last drift day i went to.

If your just starting out i'd buy the aus sprinter, go to every tarck day/drift day/hill climb/skid pan that you can get to and learn about the way you drive and what you want the car to do. Nothign worse than spendign a bomb on the car and then realising it isn't suited to the way you drive or the type of competition you want to do. That's why my car has been so long in the making, I've been learning what my skills are and trying to set the car up to compliment that. After 12 months I think i'm ready to be able to actually use more power if I had it.

I'm willing to guess I'm a touch older than you, so don't be worried about trying to keep up with everyone else, just have fun and learn!

Apologies for the lecture.....

no point gettin a ke70, too much messing round to convert it to 4a motor and box, either 71 or 86 if your keen on rwd, if you want a cheap circuit car go an ae82, there are millions around waiting to be raced
