View Full Version : What have you been defected for?

Just wanna gather a list of defects that people have gotten over the years to find out what is the most common, or over looked area that cops pick on when they pull you over so I can avoid doing the same, or mod plating it to prevent a defect.

Got dicked for tyres (x4) even though 2 were legal, Stupid dodgy cop!! Didn't help that i was coming out of a known street racing street. Took a mate for a drive from the misses's house and came down the street from the other end (forgetting what street i was in) and got dicked coming out the other end. Cop decided to take photo's of my car aswell.

because you need that ride height so you can get over speed bumps and you dont rip bits of your car off when you drive into a curb and you hit it.
the eyebrow hieghts so you still have some travel in your shocks so that its not a rigid body (if it was riding on bumpstops) so that its safe.

cause usually people dont get seat rails etc engineered so the seats safe but the mountings arent.

and yea momo's adr approved the others arent. deal with.

strut braces because the cops have no idea what they are and what they are meant for..
too low cos the cop thinks its to low lol... cant go lower than 100mm anywhere on the car..
yeh most decent race seats are not adr approved...

not been defected yet but pulled over

my ke70 has
4age conversion (engine has sold written on it)
custom rad and mounts with thermo fan in front
unmounted pod filter(it's secure enough that it doesn't move)
8kg/6.5kg springs (cop was complaining about not being able to get head under car and not being able to put finger between tyre and guard)
I know the exhaust is 88mm off ground at lowest point
I thought the rear tires needed replacing(cop didn't think so)
wiring loom doesn't look factory at all
oil all over crossmember(engine doesn't leak oil at all, I got it like that off ae86, didn't clean it)
and lots of other shit that's not really noticeable

all that and I didn't get a sticker. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Just thought i'd say a few of these little 'tips' because i rang the RTA to clear up a few little things, http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rolleyes.gif !..And now at least 8 times out of ten we are telling the coppers that YES this is legal and this is why..(hehe, most of them say "how did you know that?", its good to catch them out http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/greenbounce.gif ).

So here they are:

- Coloured Exterior lights (don't know about neons, just headlights, parkers and licence plate lights..): "Must Project a White Light onto White Paper"

- Guages:
Must be Below the top of the Steering Wheel and Must Not Block Vision or Obstruct Driver's Ability.
(but my mate just brought a modified pulsar Q off a h/way patrol cop from sydney and everything is legal..it has WRX front bucket seats (yet to be engineered), carbon fibre bonnet (legal), 5" monster tacho with S/Light and pillar guages (both aren't in the way physically or vision-wise, but are above the steering wheel, but are legal http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wtf.gif )

- Ride Height:
Lowest part of the car must not be below 100mm (exept wheels, tyres and mudflaps) and from the bottom of the headlights to the ground is 500mm

- Wheel Sizes:
1" over biggest rated factory, but can be ok with lower profile tyres..he was a bit broad there!

Please note:
This was from the RTA dude which he took from the regulations, it is up to the police to enforce it..don't be shy to ring the RTA..its good to know a bit so that way you can stand up for yourself when a cop starts to go on a power trip (rare).

If anyone else knows of any, post them up!im keen to know about this tyre and guard clearance!!!

all this defect stuff is a very grey area. im pretty sure that if they wanted to defect you for driving around a stock daewoo matiz they could....but anyway its what we have to deal with...

trick is to make your car look neat

things to look out for are, too low, and pod filters not held down (know few people been done for that), tyres are always checked, and gota make sure tyres are inside the guards...

i dont know of anyone been done for having cut springs (ie not captive) but im sure its been done.

slipper: was driving in a mates car and he couldn't fit a hair between the guards and the tyre (thankyou 8kg springs). cops didnt seem to care, so long as they were inside the guards. its our problem if we scrub tyres.

I wouldnt' bother calling up RTA places, half the time they give you one answer and you could call back 5 min later and get another answer. I know ont he Vicroads website there is all the VSI PDF's that the cops etc (which is here (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/RulesStandardsRegulations/VehicleStandardsInformation/)). Read through them, hell even print them out and carry them with you. If a cop wants to defect your car, he/she will, all they have to do is look hard enough, and no im not talking about dodgy defects either. Guess the thing to do if your car was really modified is to make a few simple to fix things defective that way its easier to get the car back on road.

*edit* PDF's are for vic

the wheels and tyres must not foul any part of the body, suspension, steering or brake components at any position of the suspension travel or steering movement, and, when in the straight ahead postion.

As far as I know when I last got a RWC 2years back, no need to carry a spare as a RWC item, only regulation is if you carry one it has to be roadworthy.

How is the car anyway mate? got that exhaust quietened down yet? Or have you got it tuned? I am keen to see what that engine puts out once it is 100% should be great!

In vic you dont need to carry a spare, but if you do it has to be properly seccured and also of road worthy condition. Also coming from a cop who wants to defect the mr2 the day its on the road again, you cant get done for not having a tyre placcard, they can request that you get one though.

done a month after month of owning my car...
- HID headlights
-no highbeam
-non standard driver seat
-exhaust
-lowered
-throttle bodies shown
-front suspension modified
-bonnet brace cut away
-hose missing from pollution box
-engine change without engineers
-driver seat mount modified
-rear wing not secure
-all mods hav no engineers certificate

this was on 2 occasion one week apart.

someone should make up some meeting with cops and talk abt having a treaty.. modifiers stay good on the road and cops stay off our ass' except for hooners and trouble makers.

definitely get an engineers to let them know its safe.. even though some cops will still defect u :(

I know that in sa you need to have a minimum eyebrow height. This is the distance between the centre of the wheel and the top lip of the guard. I got done last week for being under it in my Ke (must be 345mm, mine was 280...)

This seems to be a bit inconsistent with the test they use at regency, (100mm block to drive over) but you can still get done for it.

Also been done in the past for tyres, exhaust, wheels, steering wheel etc...

Not sure if anyone here read yesterdays Advertiser, but had front page article (cont p. 6) saying cops were to increase their quota for pulling over cars "in the interests of public safety" (what a load crap! obvious revenue raising and general head f@#k exercise). Interestingly it stated that police do not even need a reason to pull you over! although they will obviously check your licence, rego, tyres etc. They can defect you for anything at their discretion, and then it's up to you to sort it out! But anything that is not factory fitted or changes car from original manufacturers specs is defectable.

Half of them have no idea - but they are getting clued up and targeting import cars. I got into an argument once with a cop because he was going on about my 15" wheels being "oversized" and he didn't even know the difference between width, track and offset! Also when I said it was legal to increase wheel diameter and width by 2", he came back with "It's only up to 2", so you can only have a 14.9" rim" (wanker) anyway I gave him a fair bit of attitude which didn't help the situation.

Another time, I got defected for tint and since everytime I get pulled over, or they run the rego it pops up on their system and they check it! it's wak - I stripped the tint off 3 times last year to clear defects! Or another time when my car was off defect, they tried to say that I was driving the vehicle while it was defected until I showed he the clearance slip which now lives in the glove box.

man you guys have some ugly stories

i hear what your saying "741" about the quota thing being increased by cops, ive been RBT's 3 times in the last 5 days, and i dont even drink!!, and ive driven a total of about 100km, random? i dont think so

they haven't said anything at all about my car though, just checked the rego with my license and let me go. one cop though "talked" to me for like 15mins, about my "driving manner" after i took a corner a little to wide to avoid some parked cars, threatened me with taking off points, but then the "good cop" came over and did RBT and said goodby.....

touch wood i havnet been defected, haven't even had my car looked over

5th September 2008, 05:07 PM
i've never heard of any problems with rim size as long and you put lower profile tyres on so the rolling diameter is the same, the only restrictions are on rim width which is 1.3 times the original. thats what rta in mackay said anyway.

anyways what bout all the falcodores with 20's they wouldn't be legal if they couldn't go more than 2" in diameter

havent been defected but got booked doin 61 in 50 zone, was spewin but didnt want to argue. gold mirror tint and exhaust to loud but they didnt even look twice at the hachi

Got pulled over the night in my WRX about midnight, bald semi slicks, one headlight out, tried to dive down a side street when I noticed the cops tailing me :whistling: ...of course they were going to pull me over then! I have had many a defect the best one though, excessive motor rust, cause my extractmores were rusty, supposedly they add to the structual stength of the motor, and the rust would inhibit such strength.

i got defected for those things and was given only 1 day to clear it and it was a saturday?

PS. I HAD A ROLLCAGE AND STRIPPED INTERIOR AND NOTHING WAS SAID. i found that funny:)
