hoihoi
just wondering guys, has anyone acutally measured how much weight can be removed from a ke70 by stripping it? this includes the works, sound deadining, plastics, anything that isnt needed lol.
i did a search on toymods, the only single result i found was someone estimated around the 55kgs, i assume this includes the spare tyre, and jack aswell.
anyone else got an estimate? or a figure?
cheers guys

the tar layer on an ae86 is meant to be 27kg, the ke is meant to have an almost identical floorplan so it might be the same,
thats a start I guess

I can't remember now, but I think I got my Sprinter from 960kg to 860kg. The 860kg was all standard spec, 4A-C etc, no spare tyre, all seats removed except the drivers seat. All sound deadening removed except under the driver seat and the firewall.
All the sound deadening tar is around 30kg if you get all of it. The front seats weigh alot.

70's have less deadening than 86's
hachi's have it behind the rear seats in the boot floor. KE's don't, makes SFA difference anyway. you don't really pull much weight out stripping the interior. in saying that i still do it. its happening to the 70, not for weight though, i have dogs, they malt, makes my car stink like wet dog when i take them to the beach http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

so is it worth it, honestly? how much do you think can be removed from a ke70?
because im prepared to do it, but its only like 15-20kg, then meh... ill leave it

i'll say its not worth it for weight reduction alone.
however, it looks sick and is easier to keep clean.
it gets hotter especially the passenger floor (4AGE, ZE, 20V, CA, SR,) as the exhaust is now on that side. it gets noisier. adds a pretty different "feel" to the car though, just a wank factor but it feels a little "boy racer style" http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif
i'll be doing it when i find a half cage. my interior was mint i wanted to keep it in there but now its pretty poor.

Race car feel FTW
Heres what ive taken out of mine so far:
Hektic sub - 10kg
Air Conditioning condenser and piping - 8kg
5kg of deadner - 5kg weighed
Spare + jack + wheel brace - 13kg
Rear seats, parcle shelf - 14kg
Air conditioning Motor - 7kg
All up around 58kg's with the rear door trims and about 60% of the deadening still in the car.
Anyone know what the rear door trim weighs? My above weights are all measured, not estimates.

in my 86,
everysingle bit of sound deadener is gone, all the heater, condenser etc, only the dash skin sits there, anything else in the car thats not needed for racing is gone, ive also gone perspex windows on quarter panels and doors, this has got me to 878kg, and this is with a full rollcage, and other various braces.
With FRP doors hatch and bonnet I should be way under 800kg and will have more to go with fuel tank and such.

Can you give us a run down of how you did the perspex windows? And the weight saved? Thickness or perspex, normaly 3/16" I think.

Spare + jack + wheel brace - 13kg[/b]
well its gonna suck when you on the side of the road with a flat tyre isnt it, i think ill keep the extra 13kg for the fact that i wont be standing in the rain when i have a puncutre http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
yeah you might have noticed, but i cant be stuffed making my car lighter by taking stuff out. ive got tool box in th car, ice skates, soccer ball, sub box, about 20 coke bottles, quite a bit of RC car stuff, its all in there!!
with 9kg front springs and a nardi wheel, it feels enough like a race car for me http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Some people here do track days and the like, and this is what I mostly build my cars for. And at the track, you put all that junk on the ground next to your tools.
and if I'm on a country drive, I will have spare wheel and jack, but nothing else. Rubbish with move around, hit you on the head or smash a window.

ok with the perspex windows,
for the doors i used 3mm thickness, and for the rest of the car, quarter panels and hatch, i used 2mm.
The hatch area will be secured as normal with the surrounding rubber trim, and 2 strips of metal to brace it.
The quarter windows, i went and bought some surrounding rubber to make up for the thickness, since its 2mm, it doesnt fit into the clips, and with that, i sikaflex it onto the car. Doesn't seem to have any leaks or any sign of coming out http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
The doors are tricky, I attempted heat moulding but failed, what I did was use the original glass as a template, put the perspex ontop of it and started to melt it with a heat gun. The problem is, since the heat distribution isn't even it warped in some areas and so on. So the trick is to find an oven big enough to heat the entire thing till it's close to melting, then it will become a perfect shape of the original.
But atm, it seems to be fine, you just gotta guide it with your hands to slot into the door when you're winding up, but other than that it's fine, it only does that because of my shit moulding. It also doesn't shake at all so no worries there.
I took the original glasses to the plastics company, requested for the sizes, and they were cut perfectly, using the original glasses, this was done for under $200 so it's pretty cheap. I will be getting new door windows as I don't like the warpy ones I have now lol.
If i remember correctly, original scale weight of the original glass was about 10kg, and the perspex copies were 2kg. So 8kg a side is not bad, and then include the quarter windows, it's pretty good.

If it's going to be your daily car then don't bother. 50 kilos is SFA. You're just going to make your car uncomfortable, loud and hot.
I never understood why people did it unless it is going to be a pure track car.

haha yeah, i take the kids at youth group ice skating quite often, just to the public session, round and round and round the icerink for 3hrs, one time we went they gave me free hockey skates, old stock or something, so they live in the car cuase i know im gonna forget them if they arent in the car http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif
and now back on topic
this perspex, you say you used 2mm on the hatch? first thing that came to mind was that 2mm perspex wasnt very thick and that with a large area such as the back window it would flex alot? like not fall out, but spring up and down? has that been an issue?

sorry for the thread revival. I'm now starting to pull every bit of un-vital material out of the car.
however, I'm going to try and keep it as legal as possible, so ill mod-plate the car as a two seater.
here is the question: should I strip it (rear seats, carpet, sound deadening) and then try and get a mod-plate, or just unbolt the seat and seatbelts and try and get one then.
don't say that I should call Dept of Transport because I did, and they simply said they were unsure, and couldnt give me a answer. (wtf?)

my car had all of the rear trim taken out when I bought it, looked like shit, sounded like shit and didnt make ANY difference to the handling or drivability of the car, I have since put in standard trim and carpet etc, theres no point unless your doing lap times around a track, if you want a modification, do proper suspension and brakes then start fettling with the motor

yes 2mm of perspex is very flexy, what I have done on the hatch is added 2 aluminium strips to brace it. Not much problem really.

I tottaly agree, I wont let anyone get near my cars sound deadening. I think fiberglass bonnets are great though.

half the reason for weight reduction is that it's a cheap modification that affects, handling acceleration.. it's basically all purpose. I did this to my last car and I'm in the process of doing it to my silvia. appart from having more headroom (I'm over 6 foot... this matters a lot for me) I can feel a huge difference lol. as a matter of fact after I took out all my tools, paints and bullshit from my boot the back suspensino raised 20mm lol and who cares about mod plates man just yank the shit out and flip off the cops while they're defecting you. if your gunna go through the trouble of getting fixed buckets too then maybe consider getting it mod plated as a 2 seater
