Whereabouts in Japan?
If you stay around the yamanote line and the major lines running off them, it's pretty easy to navigate as most of it is in english nowadays.
One place I will recommend is going down to Nagoya buy shinkansen and go to Toyota town in Aiichi ken. Go for a tour of the factory. It's a cool tour, they even put your name up on the board of guests for the day with what country you're from.
If you aren't going out there go to the toyota museum at odaiba(can't remember the name), there's a fully restored levin, 2000GT, TA27, TA22, delorean amongst a few other cars. Toyopets and stuff.
Enjoy the trip and bring me back some jap food.

I'm going to Osaka and Kyoto. I won't have very long there so I don't want to spend time traveling. I don't even remember what stuff I'm gonna look at but I'm sure even the supermarkets will be cool to see.
This time tomorrow I'll be on the sunny shores of Japan.

I just got back from a month in Japan,
Already started saving for the return trip!
Kyoto is a really nice older town, Osaka was pretty busy and rundownish where I was.
Have fun man, it sure is a blast.

Is it way hard (and any less enjoyable) if you know no Japanese (well, apart from 'Hachi' and 'Roku')?
I mean, can you get by on English, or is it a smart idea to learn a bit of Japanese before hand?

Where do you want to go and what do you want to buy?
If you look like a foreigner, you will be fine around tokyo if you speak in english slowly. If you look like a jap, they will expect you to speak jap(they come up to me asking if I want to buy shit)
Never really been too far out of tokyo so I can't comment on rural areas but in the major areas you should be able to communicate with the bloke at the train station and he'll tell you where to go, which ticket to buy.
Buying car stuff might be hard if you get around to it.

Ok, thanks. Wouldn't be going for a few years anyway. Definitely a country I want to see though.

Im just in an internet cafe in China. Osaka wasn't really my cup of tea but I'll be going to Kyoto in a couple of weeks after China and see what the other bits of japan are like.
Having the small ammount of japanese I have really helped but more wouldve been even better. My travel experience is the more language you know usually the better itll be.
Anyway I'm off to the hotel.
