View Full Version : Thermo fan switch

I want to have thermatically switched thermo fans rather than just have them ignition switched. only problem being the only temp switch i can find is the old thermo bulb variety where you have to feed it through a radiator hose and clamp the hose as per normal. its messy and just looks wrong, add to that i've seen 2 bulbs "disappear" from movement.

after something reliable that i don't have to check for leaks, and will stay put over time.

basically i want to use a hose adaptor as you would if you were fitting an aftermarket temp gauge but instead screw in a thermo switch. I'm pretty sure i can use something from an exsisting car just have no experience at all so wouldn't even know what to consider or how they are wired (from memory they were simple devices its just been a while since i've seen one)

anyone running a set up like this or running a thermo fan switch from another car to control your fans?

this is an example of the adaptor, they commonly use a 1/8 NPT fitting

When first playing with my engine I seem to remember that one of the sensors on the back (when RWD) of the 4AG head (green or brown plugged one) was a thermal switch. Was just open/closed. You could easily test it with a multimeter and a glass of boiling water.

That would work well to control a thermo if the switching temp was right.

Also I remember some discussion on Toymods about such things. A brand that springs to mind is "Triton" or "Tridon".

I have the standard RWD water set up on my bigport and have now replaced the thermostat housing with the top AE82 thermostat housing. This has the Toyota fan temp switch incorporated. Clears everything OK though note this car is not running at present. Cant see any likely problem though. Can still use the standard 4AGE bottom hose, the angle changes only slightly.

I have looked at various other Toyota thermostat housings and the angle of the temp switch isn't suitable, as the plug fouls.

I am setting up the wiring as per Witzl's Toymods FAQ

need an adaptor to screw into the adaptor to let me fit those metric switches into a 1/8 fitting http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

sorry, with link!

Screw the adaptor, just find a bigger threaded sensor and drill and tap a new thread to suit it.

what engine is this on?

my 4AGE was out of a FWD motor, so i'm using a remote thermostat housing. for a while i used a switch to turn the fans on, but then i worked out what the sensor in the body of this was (a thermoswitch) got a plug for it and hooked it up.

just a few points:

themoswitches are normally closed, meaning when it gets to temp it breaks elecrictal contact, your relays need to be set up accordingly

you will need to ground whatever the thermoswitch is screwed in to, as thermo switches pull to ground.

go to pick a part, the thing screwed into the remote Tstat housing on all FWD 4AC/whatever corollas are thermo switches.

hey gilly, most FWD cars have a themo switch thing that sits somewhere in the water system (usually near the water pump), basically just a switch that you stick a wire onto it, and when it gets "hot" it grounds the wire (aka switching your fan on)

you should be be able to get the VDO catalogue and pick out a specific one that does a specific temperature.

and hopefully it fits in your hole, otherwise you can buy little thread conversion things, just like a metal sheath thing, and you screw it into your engine, and then you screw the temp switch into that.

i been through all this crap when i bought a sender for my VDO temp guage, belive me....the guys at repco are useless:P

edit : grr roadsailing beat me to it, yeah what he said:P
