Hi guys,
I'm in the market for a new clutch/flywheel and found an XTD 6 puck clutch and lightened flywheel package. I'm planning to keep my AE86 streetable, but don't mind some slight harshness. The seller claims the clutch has extreme race performance, yet is perfectly smooth on the street...yada yada yada. Sounds like a sell if i've ever heard one.

I'm interested in hearing if anyone else has driven a 6 puck clutch and lightened flywheel (probably makes a huge difference as well) combo or similar and their opinions... although I'm guessing the 6 puck should be a fair be smoother than a 4 or 3 puck, yeah? Cos I've noticed most people on this forum has either 3 or 4 puck clutch setups.

Cheers,
Ves

just had a quick search on the net about clutches (coz i don't know very much about them when it comes to buttons, pucks, Materials and stuff) and the guy in the page below seems to reacon it doesn't matter how many pucks it has, it's what material it's made of.

a break down of the video...

more pucks the clutch is made of, the better it cools down.
different materials give different grabs.

have a look at the video.. it's really good :2thumbs:

If it is made of this supossed copper mix pucks, i know brass and copper in real life are similar metals... might be an indication of how well it grabs?

Thanks for the Vid, Verm. That 10mins or so probably taught me more about the various types of clutches out there, than what I've been reading over the past couple of years! Much appreciated.

Cheers,
Ves

If it is predominantly a road car, the clutch is a big mistake. Will be a pig to drive and you will regret it.

It isn't necessary and will just put extra strain on your driveline.

Just get a decent quality conventional clutch plate and spend your money on something else. The lightened flywheel will affect the driveability too but has its good points in particular pickup on acceleration to the power band, however you will drop out of your camshaft power band more easily as less momentum compared to a heavier flywheel.

I have a 4 puk solid center clutch in my 86, and I've had a sprung 4 puk and sprung 6 puk in some of my other cars.

The solid puk is a little worse than the others, but they are all fine in traffic, well for me at least <_<

It might pay to test drive a few different types if you can, before shelling out the coin.

Oh, and when my clutch wears out, I'll be going to a standard supercharged cltuch plate, with the stronger pressure plate. Only caus they are dirt cheap for me though, can get 10 of them for the same price as a puk B)

Ive had a 3 puck brass button in mine for 5 months or so now... its fine to drive, a day or 2 to adjust and its sweet, I can creep over speed humps ect slow as miss daisy without stalling or riding it.. Basically saying that its fine for street use IMO
Diff is welded also..

Does the clutch shudder when you creep slowly though?

nope, just a matter of getting the right technique down

nope, just a matter of getting the right technique down[/b]

When you say right technique, do you basically have to ride/slip the clutch with a decent amount of revs. Cos won't that wear out a puck clutch real quick?

if you wnat a steetable car get a street clutch. race clutches are called that for a reason.

no, no slipping/riding.. just need good feet technique.. just takes a little practice to be able to drive the puck clutch without fucking it or stalling it.. but I find it easy..
