hey everyone thought i would just start a build thread. I have never done one and thought now would be a perfect time to. I have gone from 71 to 86 to s13 and now back to 71. Just had to go back to toyota, anyway here is my ride and some specs so far :)

1984 Ae71 corolla

0.5mm trd head gasket
brand new seals through out the whole motor.

i will post more pics up at the end of the week. i should be getting my head back so hopfully i get the engine and box t shaft in on the weekend. the sr20det booster fits straight in. u have to hammer the wheel arch just a little otherwise goes straight in. i also bashed the booster a tiny bit to fit the master.

just a little update. I have got my head back from getting cleaned and machined. also installed struts. but the strut does not apear to fit onto the ke70 steering arm>>? so im jsut getting some sigma control arms and some power steering arms. brake booster is in with the clutch master fitting in next to it nice and tight. hope fully it will be running in a week or 2

Just a update. i have the engine in, fuel system jsut about finished, suspension done, wheels on, brake lines and clutch line installed box and tailshaft bolted up. umm what else. jsut need to do small stuff now. eg cluster alittle interior work etc. but hopefully it will be done and sent of to get wired up :)

I think anything between $100-150 is fair. Anything less than $100 is a bargain.

In saying that though, you're going to have more trouble finding a JDM bell separate than what you would finding an entire JDM box.

what exhuast are you using. heat sheild? heat wrap? in my 86 the bleeder nipple was sitting on the exhaust and it never failed. something else has to be up???

yea my bleeder nipple is sitting on the exhaust aswell. it jsut seems to ( sometimes ) get to hot and my clutch sorta fails to work. cause the fluid is to hot. that is called clutch fade. i dno it isnt really doin it atm. so ill jsut have to under go some trial and error.

OK ok im fairly sure my clutch problem is fixed. it appears the problem was that my bleed nipple on the slave was on the bottom insted of the top. It being on the top will now allow air to travel up there than hang around down near the pot. meh its complicated but i sorta understand. So yea. lets go driving Anyone :)

just a little update. i have bought a jdm t50 so that went in today with the help of the old bams ketle- cheers for your help and i also got some trust 4-1 extractors of ( sundee866 ) so this hopefully will solve all my clutch problems.

updates. well tacho dach is no working, kdm t50 is in and running. car goes alright. i think the speedo is out alittle. and umm i dno what the hell do u want updates on. the only reason im not releasing any skids on the street is because im on a good behaviour thig and i have 0 points for 8 weeks. dont ask why. thats just what my sentance was instead of losing my license for 3 months..

its a ca18det btw. Some like the idea of putting a nissan engine in a toyota and some dont. I personally dont give a fuck. I just want a car that will go good look like poo and be cheap to maintain.

you say cheap to maintain but you buy dirt cheap oil and Ca's are most defiantly not reliable imo get a good diff with good ratios and have some fun but this will take you about 2 years to build so its not that much of an issue if u want cheap to maintain and fun SR20!

and knowing you is there any plan for any of this. the motor i know you have & mounts and a box but have you got plans for a fuel system cooling system and who will be wiring this is no easy job if you drop a rock stock sr20 in there you will have fun but your ca you are planing on pulling apart and rebuilding factoring all the costs up that's alot of cash and the sr20's don't really need oil or much water to run similar to the 4age's a ca18 is like a baby constant attention must be paid to it or it will die

reason i decided to go ca18det :)

well first its alittle different not that many people put ca's in compared to sr20's yea i kno sr are a very good motor and can run good power with no internal work. all motor's need oil and water mat. dont just go of what ben's 4a did and jason burks sr did. im sure if you put most other engine through similar conditions that they would run the same.

here are some of the differences:

The SR has 2.0 liters of displacement while the CA only has 1.8.
SR has chain timing, while the CA has belt.
SR has 86 x 86 bore and stroke, CA has 83 x 83.6.
SR has 1 lobe per 2 valves, CA has 1 lobe per valve.
SR will redline at 7500, CA will redline at 7600.
SR has aluminum block, CA has cast iron block.
SR has 205 hp stock, CA has 175.


From that list, the SR seems to have a lot more plusses than the CA, however don't go off of that list, it's simply listing the differences. The CA is a great engine. In fact, for those of you who are familiar with a little car that Nissan makes called the Skyline, (which comes equipped with an RB series engine) the CA IS an RB engine, with 2 cylinders chopped off (not literally, they don't cut them off, but you understand..). The iron block is capable of handling much more HP and it's a much smoother running engine. The CA can be found in older 'Pulsar's here in the US so a lot of the parts can be found rather easily for them. The CA is also said to be able to take more abuse than the SR

Both the SR and the CA have a 16 valve inline 4. The SR has 1 cam lobe that works with a rocker arm to lift 2 valves, while the CA has a cam lobe for each valve. This results in the CA being a quieter engine and having the potential for higher revs. Why did Nissan do that to the SR? Because it's cheaper to manufacture.

Thats just a little info for everyone. Dont take me wrong the sr20 is a great motor and Pen15 sounds like he is inlove with them the amount of times he mentioned them in that last post.

And yes it will be alittle cheaper to maintain i just have to do that little extra research and looking around due to parts not being as popular. Just for the record the ca is NO BABY just sit tight mat. And as for the fuel setup i have got 3 meters of 10mm copper line that is goin to run from the surge to the motor. all i need is a surge tank and a new fuel pump. :)

ok so far for this dirty ca18det conversion i have rathered the following parts.

* engine and gearbox
* loom and ecu
* custom engine mounts and tailshaft to suit t,f and e series diff
* oil cooler and braided lines
* Hd clutch
* i have intercooler and piping that has to be modified
* 10mm copper fuel line




All i need now is.

* surge tank and fuel pump
* f series diff. also needs to be modified
* oil adapter plate for oil cooler.
* New alloy radiator

cant think of anymore atm but will update.



plans atm are to get some coilovers. modify the rear gaurds to fit wheel under once f series diff is installed.

my oil and water comment was not only derived from Benny D's motor but also my old 4age witch never had oil and still ran like new the ca18 is also a very heavy motor because of the cast iron factor witch will throw your front to back weight distribution also because we live in Australia the conditions are alot rougher than that of the USA

i personally have not seen very many ca18's out there doing good reliable numbers without spending big $$$$

i have the solution get a 1.8 fe bottom end and make your 4age a 1.8

If you've got the room keep it in the bay.

Its also not legal to have it in the boot unless its in a sealed enclosure that vents to the outside.

Pulled my finger out on this 40*C fucking sunday afternoon and decided to put my front sway bar in. really happy with them. feels much ridged in the front end. only had one problem when installing them. and that was i had to angle grind abit of the K frame hole to fit the adjustment part of the sway bar through.

Got my wheels finally after like 9-10 weeks of pure waiting. Even better they didnt get posted to my door they where sent to castle hill. Cheers AJPS- anyway there on now not real sure i like it. IM thinking of taking the set and just getting them painted the same colour as the rears. Didnt realise but the rear ones are GTR superlites and the front are just the normal ones. big differnece in weight. They will just have to do for now.

Sundee - omfg it has been such a suff around with the wheels. took like 9 weeks to get them. then i relised i got the wrong ones. Im saving for another pair. Of GTR's. there is a big difference between the to.

And clint i didnt relise at the time. yea been goin bends alittle. Nothing like say two years ago tho. Thats where i kissed the gaurd rail. was fun tho. Im goin to E.K peanut track on sat. otherwise we dont really have any other tracks for drifting down here atm
