View Full Version : Tercel swaybar into ae86

Iv bought myself a tercel swaybar, problem is im having trouble working out the best and easiest way to mount it to my ae86.

Basically, the bar is too long to fit between the standard S-series diff mounts and the mounts connecting to the chassis rail.

The way I see it, either I need to extend the diff mounts by welding new plates onto the mounts or... making an extended "you" shaped mount for the chassis rail bracket (the one with bushes on it), or move the bracket that connects to the chassis rail;therefore moving the "you" shaped mount for me.

Either way is do-able, I just want to know from someone who has done it so I know what problems im going to come up against.

If anyone wants photo's of the bits im talking about, it will have to wait til the weekend.

Thanks in advance

Dane.

P.s. the "you" is supposed to be a capital you... stupid spell check

the idea was that when you weld your plates onto a ser 1 t diff you shift the mounts up to adviod it hitting the drain.

not sure how it can be too big re mounts :S

mine was off an AL25

hitting the drain plug was another thing I was worried about, atleast I know which way I have to go now <_<

you have to bend the links back heaps

it makes a noticable difference 17mm good time to grab some new bushes while you are at it

that seems a little dodgey?

how have other people got them to fit?

OR you could buy a proper swaybar that bolts on directly. ;)

ahh i had to slightly dent the diff housing cover plate so it would fit. (borgy)

all sweet now.

I used an RA60 rear end, pretty sure its bout the same, which required the links to be bent just a bit to fit the sway bar on. Wasn't very technical, just stick the sway bar in, bent links to make fit, ghetto man style. On another note... why aren't more people using RA60 diffs?

loaded Lol lol it's 100bux odd for a new whiteline sway letalone a used one for japan

buy the time you buy a tercel, fuel to the wreckers and back, time spent taking it off and the price of the sway bar , you could of brought a 2nd handie from japan or a brand new one from whiteline.

Do it right once and don't fark around , do it half arsed and you'll be for ever chasing your tail.

cut and re weld the sway bar shorter if you have a welder.

I don't agree with above. while its not as good as a proper aftermarket sway bar, it does make a difference and costs as little as 1/6th the price. you have to fit it anyway, bending the mounts would take ten seconds.

its less than ten dollars to go to the wreckers, and if you go to the right one, the part will cost about ten dollars. its something you would just grab while youre there, as it takes all of 5 minutes to remove.

you can also force it to fit without bending anything. fit at body end first, then put a screw driver through the hole in the U bracket then through the bolt hole in the diff bracket, lever it forward, clamp with vise grips, do up bolt.

Whiteline adjustable swaybar is $280rrp
Non-Adjustable is $240rrp
I paid $180 for my adjustables at trade price.
Tercel swaybar from the wrecker, what, $20?? So one ninth of trade price, one twelth of rrp.

At that price differential, if it's half as good as an aftermarket one then it's a winner. And i know of one wrecker in Vic where there are at least 3 to be had so supply is not an issue as it would be waiting for a used whiteline to show up.

can't say its easy to fit these to a T series housing as well, the center hits, making it hard. you can bend, but it'd be no easy task

i got mine for $15 with new poly bushes, welded mounts on the diff, test fit, refit and voila! i have some I'm not complaining about and works 3 times better than the stocko.

the entire idea of it was to be dodgy gah!

But thats the spirit of owning an 86... ghetto modding. Boo to the people who do things with their fancy pants money and shiny new parts.

actually you can. youre not meant to, but plenty of people have, and it works.
