ENERGYAUSTRALIA APPRENTICESHIPS - QUESTIONS
The following problems are representative of the standard that is required for successful
completion in the pre-selection test. This test is to be used to determine eligibility for
interview for the Apprenticeships in EnergyAustralia.
1. 1/3 + 2/5 = (1x5+2x3/3x5 *working out)=11/15
2. 52 divided by 0.5 = 104

4. Express in scientific notation
0.0000643
5. The area of the triangle OPQ in square units is:-
O = (0,0) P = (3,4) Q = (5,0)
y
0 x
6. If y = 6x + c, then x = ?
7. What is Sin f = ? as a decimal
P = (4,3)
YP fx
8. Simpify: 10-4 x 106
9. A car travels 42kms in 20 minutes. What is the average speed in km/hour ?
10. Given A = 3B (2+D). Make D the subject of the formula.
11. Given the formula 1 = 1 + 1, calculate the value of A when S = 3 and B = 4.
S A B
12. Calculate the area in square millimetres of the shaded portion of the sheet of steel
shown.
(All dimensions are in millimetres and p = 22 divided by 7)
13. A crank wheel of a bicycle has 48 cogs and the back sprocket wheel has 12 cogs.
How many revolutions per minute does the crank wheel have to be turned so that the
sprocket wheel rotates at 80RPM ?

I think the answer to 9 is 126kmh but I could be wrong because I am also not that great at maths

wow haha how did you work out these anwsers lol

Mine was the easiest..
20 x 3 = 60 (an hour)
so...
42 x 3 = ?? (travelled in that hour)
In other words, if you do 42kms for every 20 minutes, and there are 3 lots of 20 minutes in an hour, it means you did 42 x 3 (126) in that hour, meaning you were travelling, 126kmhs

1. 1/3 + 2/5 = (1x5+2x3/3x5 *working out)=11/15
2. 52 divided by 0.5 = 104
3. (x-2) (3x-3) = 3x^2-3x-6x+6 = 3x^2-9x+6 = x^2-3x+2
4. Express in scientific notation
0.0000643 = 6.43x10^-5
5. The area of the triangle OPQ in square units is:-
O = (0,0) P = (3,4) Q = (5,0)
= 0.5*5*4 = 10
6. If y = 6x + c, then x = (y-c)/6
7. What is Sin f = ? as a decimal
errrr wha?
8. Simpify: 10-4 x 106 = -414
9. A car travels 42kms in 20 minutes. What is the average speed in km/hour ?
126km/h
10. Given A = 3B (2+D). Make D the subject of the formula.
D=(A-6B)/3B
11. Given the formula 1 = 1 + 1, calculate the value of A when S = 3 and B = 4.
3 = A + 4
A = -1
12. Calculate the area in square millimetres of the shaded portion of the sheet of steel
shown.
bit hard to do without a picture
13. A crank wheel of a bicycle has 48 cogs and the back sprocket wheel has 12 cogs.
How many revolutions per minute does the crank wheel have to be turned so that the
sprocket wheel rotates at 80RPM ?
80/4 = 20RPM
This is based on how well you copy and pasted the questions... If you can't answer these then good luck in either getting or keeping the job....

the one about the triangle, best way to do this, is draw it up in a grid, and then divide the triangle into right angle triangles so you work out the area of them
you cannot work out the area of a non right angle triangle, without the cos/sin rule (which i would say is a lot more advanced than this stuff)
here's explanation
aaaaaaahhh has the rest correct

Some of those are worded a bit strange, particularly 7 and 11...
3. (x-2) (3x-3) = 3x^2-3x-6x+6 = 3x^2-9x+6 = x^2-3x+2[/b]
this is only valid if the original equation is "(x-2) (3x-3) = 0" (not "(x-2) (3x-3) = ?")
they might get picky, the first answer probably safer
10. Given A = 3B (2+D). Make D the subject of the formula.
D=(A-6B)/3B[/b]
naahhh...
D=(A/3B) - 2

I just assumed because it said = ? they wanted it simplified. And for q10, same shit different stink :P
Good point on the triangle one too.

it's not that hard! There are only a few simple concepts you need for those questions.
Do you know anyone who is half decent at maths? They might be able to help. You might need to spend a few hours studying to get your head around it but it's worth it if the job is what you want to do...

these questions have nothing to do with your job. V=IR. Voltage=I(current) x Resistance.
and the power equations is all you really need to know. those questions are really just to decipher if your willing to study.

no seriously... im starting to wonder..
I have a coworker that just recently started working for defence as a intel officer...
he couldnt even come up with a gen maths solution such as 0.0000643 = 6.43x10^-5
yo leo are these what aptitude test like in the IT industry :D

im actually studying to become a maths teacher so perhaps I could be of some help, it appears you have already had the questions answered, im too lazy to check them.
one thing you might find helpful, when you read a question that says for example, km/h or km per hour, or k's an hour or what ever, per or the / actually means divide, so think of km's divided by hours.
so 20k's in 40 mins
would be 20 div 40 mins in hours, which would be about . 6 something, so 20/.6 = 33k's and hour
RobertoX

or to get the answer more accurate you could do:
20 divided by 40(mins)/60(mins in 1 hr)
which you can do easily without paper 20/(4/6) = 20*(6/4) = 20*3/2 = 30kmph :)
